Rec'd call on Mon. March 2/15 stating that they are calling from Public Safety Of Canada regarding my computer having viruses or hackers using my computer. I asked where they are located and the girl named Alicia with an Asian accent said in Ottawa, Ontario. She said you know Ottawa? Like Ontario? I said yes I do know! Than I asked for phone number to get back to her and she gave it to me loud and clear 1-800-409-4372. Then I asked for the address and she was sort of nervous when giving out the info. I told her that I needed to call my work for them to call her back with the info. She sounded quite relief. She told me 279 Lalrieal Ave, Ottawa, Ontario. i couldn't understand her cause she mumbled the street name. I then asked her to spell it out for me and she gave me this after trying to sound out the letters in the name a couple of times. I then proceeded to ask her why she is invading my privacy. You do know that you are breaking the privacy act don't you? Unless you have a consent from a judge or the owner of the account, you are breaking the law. She went very quiet and then told me that her manager from Public Safety Of Canada gave her the consent. I told her I didn't receive any notices or calls regarding this beforehand and she went quiet again. She then told me the government of Ottawa, Ontario gave her consent. I then asked to speak with her manager or supervisor and she hung up on me. Obviously, this is a scam. First of all, she couldn't spell the street name right let alone pronounce it right. Secondly, she didn't have proof or any info on the account - she didn't even know my name only the last name. Anyone can get that from a phone book and just add a Mr. or Mrs. when they call and hear the person's voice on the other end. Thirdly, why would they just hang up? If they were legit, she would have called the manager over or at least given me their name and number to call them!
This person was foreign. Started conversation with "I'm calling about your new computer". I stopped her and said that I don't have one, and before I could ask to have my number removed, she hung up on me.
