My uncle got a call in northern VA from someone at 607-724-9716, claiming to be the IRS, saying that this was his last notice, and that he owed taxes from 2008. He was told that he would be arrested, if he did not pay immediately. He was told to call 202-239-6012, which is another scam number. He was told to get cash out of an ATM and bring it to a Walgreen cashier, to get what sounds like an untraceable debit card. They asked him for his zip code (he has a listed phone number, so they could already know his address, for followup scams.)

I told him that it was a scam, and that someone was trying to steal from him, as the IRS does not operate that way. Since they said something about making a pickup at his home, I told him to call the local police. The sheriff's office told him that this scam has been going on for over a year, and they've gotten lots of calls about it, and not to worry. I told him to not answer the door and to call 9-1-1 if someone showed up there.
