I also just got this same phone call at my home. when I called them back, I confronted them, and I got a similar story.
That my computer had failed to load an update, and that Microsoft was calling to help me install it. When I asked why they had my phone humber and where they got it from, I was put on the phone with another person - who finally identified himself as "Jack Watson, supervisor for Microsoft".

I received a phone call on thursday 1/15/15 @10am from someone with heavy accent that couldn't even say computer claiming I had Errors in my windows , at 1st i thought they where asking about the temperature in my windows that's how distorted his words were & insisted I log into my computer "NOW" & do some certain typing & I said let me get your name & number & call you back & he said this number is to Microsoft 202-697-9425 & ask for jack watson, that's me & my job ....& my computer is working fine , no heavy use besides photos & surfing no reason for errors
