I got a call on Sept 26, 2016 from 844-594-7401 saying the same thing.

Just got a call from this number (caller ID was from Washnigton, D.C.) with an automated message left on my voicemail saying that the US Treasury Department had filed a claim against me for back taxes. Upon calling the number, they answered 'US Treasury Department', I was told that they'd done an audit of my taxes from 2010-2015 and due to significant inconsistencies in my filing a law suit had been filed. I was suspicious as I was the victim of identity theft in 2012 and know the IRS will notify you by mail in similar circumstances however remained respectful for the same reasons, just in case. I then asked the 'representative' how I would go about resolving the issue. I was told I was being transferred me to their 'restitution' department who would then contact me online to communicate. While on hold I googled the number and found these reports so hung up. AND THEY CALLED BACK. I answered and a rather rude gentleman asked me what had happened and why I'd hung up. I politely explained that I researched their number, my familiarity with the IRS' policy mentioned above and that both led me to believe this was a scam. I then thanked him and told him I would follow up independently with the IRS tomorrow during business hours and to have a good day... At which point he angrily replied 'What's wrong with you, I should send the police to arrest you right now!' My reply was colorful but included commentary that I should do the same for him at which point HE hung up. I'm in my 30's with a Masters degree and while wary about the validity of the initial voicemail and call, it still made my stomach jump when hearing that I had a lawsuit pending against me. I think of my mother, grandparents or others who are less familiar with the prevalence of such scams receiving the same call, having the same experience and it makes me ill. Never trust anyone who contacts you via phone or email, no matter what they claim is happening legally, without verifying the claim independently or through writing! Please, pass it on and protect those who are vulnerable to @&$*#! like these.
