He received a call from 212-512-2524 that wanted access to his computer because some hackers had invaded his privacy and they wanted to fix the problem. He told them he wasn't going to allow them on his computer and they hung up on him. He called the number back and got a recording that it was a spoofed number and to report it to us.

Consumer received a call from a guy who was telling him that there was a problem with his computer - he needed to go to his computer right now, and the caller would walk him through getting the problem corrected. The consumer played along a little - told the caller that he wasn't at the computer right now, just tell him what the problem was and he would take a look at it later. The caller insisted that the consumer needed to go to the computer right away. The consumer asked the caller for his name - told him that it was 'Arthur' - consumer asked his last name, caller gave a response, but the consumer did not catch it, and asked him how to spell that, and then the caller hung up. Caller id showed New York, NY. The consumer did a call back (from his caller list on the phone) on the number, and that is when he was connected to the McGraw-Hill number with Patricia's message and that he should contact the FCC to report the call as 'spoofing'.

The person told me my computer's IP address had been identified as having a virus and wanted me to proceed through steps with him to "fix" this problem for which he needed me to download software on a website and give him my credit card number.
