Caller identified herself as being from Microsoft. Claimed "they" had received an error message from my computer indicating it's infected with malware, and that I needed to download their software to fix it. I handed the phone to my (IT tech) roommate, who listened to her story, politely thanked her, and hung up. He explained it's a scam, that Microsoft does not call people like this, and that the phone number is "spoofed".

At first they would not identify themselves at all. When I demanded, they claimed be from the "Technical Support area of Windows". They were trying to tell me my computer was infected and needed to be cleaned immediately. I got their # from Caller ID

Claimed to be Microsoft and that they wanted to help fix my Windows program. I knew it was a scam since they had called 2-3 times a day for 3 days and left weird messages and my phone shows a list of how many times they called and the phone number. So I called the number and it does not accept calls and says it is out of service. I also called Microsoft to report it and they said the NEVER call customers, customers call in only. Said it was a scam. 1-253-820-3089. I told them not to call again when I spoke with them this morning, and they just called again.

PC problems can be fixed over the phone. I stopped him and told him we didn't have a pc and hung up, even though we do have one in the house.

Informed my my windows computer was infected and spreading viruses - tried to get me to give them information. Claimed to be from "Windows". I pointed out "Windows" is not a company, Microsoft is. He called me an idiot and told me they are servicing for Microsoft. I pointed out we only have Macs in this house (true), and I had a background in IT and they were clearly fishing for information. I told him I was reporting them to the FCC and he became irate and called me an idiot again. This is a dangerous scam as folks who do not know about computers may become rattled and give away info. There is information on the internet forums about calls to other folks more competent than I. Please look in to this so folks are not taken advantage of (like my parents, or my wifes parents, who could easily fall victim).
