Our house number got a call yesterday and today telling us that our online services to clean up our computer we had received last year, (and we did do some online business with a remote tech support last year... and they did seem to charge a lot more than I thought...) and this caller wanted to refund us $250 dollars. But we had to go to the computer and follow instructions.
To make a long story short, I said I do not want them to remotely access my computer. They assured me several times they were not going to do that. All the while I'm asking for the name of their business and I only get a garbled incoherent name. I ask them to spell it out and they ignore my request and move on to other questions and statements of "look sir we're trying to refund your money. Don't you want your money?"
I ask to speak to his manager. "David" comes on. I ask for his full name. He tells me it's David Wilson.
I ask for the business address and he refuses to give it to me.
I tell David if you can't give me your address I'm not going to give you access.
Then he informs me that if I don't give remote access, my computer will crash and all my computer's information will be wiped clean and lost forever.
I tell him this all sounds extremely suspicious. But I will give him access if he gives me his business address. He refuses and tells me if I hang up my computer will crash within half an hour if that's what I want.
I said. Bye. I'm hanging up.
(I've unplugged my computer and figure I won't plug it back in for a couple days.
