DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER OR MEDICARE NUMBER OR HEALTH INSURANCE NUMBER TO ANYONE OVER THE PHONE! EVEN IF IT SEEMS LIKE A LEGIT CALL!
Got a call from this number today - Said it was Atrium - Wake Forest - woman said she needed more info to bill for a test I recently had. Then asked me my address, my marital status and then my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER!!!
Thing is, first my insurer had to pre-approve this test and it wasn't until Wake got that okay from them that they finally made their first call to me about what I needed to do first before they could schedule the test. So Wake already knew, damn well, who they were going to bill for it.
In that initial call from Wake, they told me I first had to set up a My Chart account with them and put all my personal and insurance information in that My Chart account. It was only AFTER that was set up that Wake called me back to actually schedule the test. And the receptionist at the test facility already had all of my information in their computer when I came in for my test.
When this woman caller today asked for my SSN#, I remembered that when I was setting up the My Chart account, Wake explicitly stated on their website that they DO NOT use your Social Security number and will never ask for it!. So that set off an alarm bell in my head!
Plus, Medicare hasn't used SS#'s for several years now. They have their own "numbering" system - and you only have to give that Medicare number to medical providers if you use Medicare itself for your healthcare. If you use an outside insurer, like BC/BS, then the only number/card you ever need to give to anyone is that insurance company's card number.
I told her she already had all the info they needed to bill me and that I don't give my social security or Medicare number out over the phone to anyone. She even had the nerve to say "oh it's okay to give it to me because as I enter it into the computer it gets turned into x's on the screen." I said that doesn't mean that you aren't writing it down. She then started to moan that she "didn't know how she was going to bill this if I wouldn't give her my Social Security or Medicare number." I said, you're going to bill it by sending the bill to the insurance company account that I gave you when I opened my Wake Forest My Chart. That's when she hung up.
Now this woman may actually work for Wake Forest, which is how she knew my name, phone number, etc., and that I recently had a test done there. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN SHE ISN'T A SCAMMER! My sister, who worked as a nurse for a hospital, had all her personal information stolen by an employee in the personnel department! That woman actually managed to use my sister's credit to buy a house for herself, which my sister didn't discover until she, herself, went to buy a house and got denied a home loan because of the scammer's existing home loan. It was a nightmare trying to get that corrected.
Now I have to try to figure out how I can even report this to Wake Forest, with their automated telephone system.
Just remember - it's okay to give your personal info if you made the call, but keep your wit's about you if you receive an unexpected call - even if they seem to have a lot of your information!
This is only a call as a reminder for a doctor's appointment. It's not a scam, but it is a pre-recorded message.
Yes i got a call today from this number, same thing.
I received a call from this number today and it is from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. If you try to call it back, a recording informs you that someone was trying to reach you or someone in your house from Wake Forest Baptist.
