I received this call and it scared the crap out of me until I asked the person on the phone to confirm the type of form I filed for 2013 and the amount I owed/paid. There was a complete fumble for words when I asked that. Lol..gotcha suckers!

I actually got a call/vm like this some time ago, and it scared me... for a minute, then realized it was a scam and didn't think more about it. Thanks for posting, very courageous and helpful for those who haven't had this happen yet

Thank god for this thread! Grateful to learn this is a SCAM.

I almost had a heart attack on West 23rd Street today in Manhattan...

10:57 AM
(360) 807-5526
Officer Marvin Brown
Federal Law Enforcement
IRM 49726
Case ID HFL45129Davis

I got called this morning from this Washington State number while I was at work. "Officer Marvin Brown" was a woman with a thick West Indies accent and what I later realized was a poor VoIP connection. She was very convincing about me owing the IRS $75,000 because of "negligent misfilings between 2008 - 2014" referencing an old address where letters were sent, which I "ignored". Obviously I never received them. She said I also never responses to calls from their 800 number.

Officer Brown said I "willfully neglected paying taxes" and was therefore being "indicted" on 4 different counts for "fraud and tax evasion". She said she was calling to alert me there was now a warrant out for my arrest.

I told her I was 100% unaware of any wrongdoing and would pay any outstanding balance to the IRS, but she reiterated, "This is not about the money. It is about 'Protocol'. You are in violation of [x,y,z] the of the IRS Tax Code [bla, bla, blah]." (fading reception on her poor connection)

She kept telling me she was trying to help, and asked if I had an attorney. I don't because I have never needed one....

So I The connection was poor and it was so loud on the street -- there was no way I would have this call in the office! I was getting more and more anxious about potentially being handcuffed in my suit at work.

I asked if I could call her back from somewhere quiet and private, and told me not to hang up. If I did, she said I had 30 minutes before the police would arrest me. She warrant was being issued "effective immediately."

HERE'S THE KICKER: She told me to pay using the IRS.GOV website.

Seems legit, RIGHT?!

I said ok, but *then* she told me to hold. "Officer" Brown told me she could run a background check to see if I am a citizen in "good standing". She put me on hold again and was back on the line in less than 2 minutes stating that indeed I was.

Because I was an upright citizen, I could pay according to a payment plan immediately: $3,991.73. "Can you pay this today? If so, we can issue a receipt and you will be clear temporarily while we review your case with the District Attorney."

But in order to process payment and clear my name more immediately, I needed to send payment via MONEY GRAM -- not the IRS.gov website.

That was the tipping point.

She had me until that moment....

I had to hang up.

Once I did, I realized the "Federal Law Enforcement" is not an agency. I called the number back, but no one answered.

But the Money Gram wiring scam was the red flag. Then everything hit me like that moment in Usual Suspects...

I really thought I did something wrong...

I'm so upset and relieved at the same time...

UPDATE: They called again! I called back to record the call this time, but to no avail. They would not answer. I just downloaded an iphone app to tape any such calls in the future.

What a mind-f&ck this was today....

Thanks for the news. Got a call. Knew it was strange. Didn't answer. They left a VM that tries to scare you to call right away. Don't fall for it! I didn't. I looked on the internet first. Gotta stick together. Thanks again for the Intel. Bogus SCAM! Blocked number.

The IRS does not make phone calls but sends letters which immediately tells you that this phone call is a scam. They're not fooling me with this recording to call this number
