I hung up before they made the pitch... but after calling back, the automated message said it was a telemarketing call.

I got a call from this number at 11:55 pm! I was up already but the rest of my family was sound asleep (at least they were). When I picked up I didn't get a response. I called back and the recorded message gave 2 options. Press 1) leave your 10-digit # to be placed on their do not call list or Press 2) to speak with a live person. When I pressed 2 it didn't connect me to anyone (they were probably sleeping) and instead forwarded me to a mailbox which was full.

I get all sorts of calls from telemarketers and such which I ignore throughout the day, but never at midnight. This was ridiculous..

Caller: recorded message when I called back claimed to be telemarketing company (no name given)

It's a telemarketing company. Apparently the company is checking if your number is a working number before selling it to other telemarketers. Call them back and get on their do not call list.
