He said his name was Herbert August and he was calling on behalf of General Electric. He said they noticed we just bought a home and had a welcome gift for us. Asked where we moved from, how many people are in the family, do we like Florida, and other small talk. He wanted to make sure all members of my family would be home when they come to deliver the gift. Then he makes a small mention in passing of getting a quick water sample before they leave. I just wanted to get off the phone at this point so say OK, knowing in my head that this is all some elaborate scam.
Sure enough, I was able to find several ripoff reports and BBB complaints about this company. I called Herbert back and he stated the company is "General Electric AvantaPure" and the franchise company is "Water Equipment Technology". This brought up even more complaints and horror stories of reps coming to peoples house with the promise of a gift card or other gift and in turn spending 2+ hours in their home testing the water and trying to sell them $7K+ water filter systems.
I told Herbert he could skip the trip and stop trying to scam me. He said, "I didn't say we were coming with a gift, you made an appointment to get your water tested." Ha! What a scam!
Beware of this guy, this company, and this type of scam. Never give out personal information and never let someone into your home you do not know. Also, do not be fooled by the coy soft spoken old man who calls to welcome you to your new home.
