The give out false information to scare you into giving a payment over the phone. Contact your state Attorney General's office and fill out a form, and by law, they have to stop calling you. Also, contact consumer affairs, they claim to be at first a Law Office. Do not give any credit card or checking account information over the phone to these people. By law, you cannot be arrested for not paying a bill. They call this number for someone who is no longer living here.
I have received many calles from these clowns over the years (7 years to be exact). Even though I have no outstanding debt and have never had any, there seems to be no stopping the calls unless I change my number, which I am thinking is a good option. Last week, they called me from an Oregon number 503 509 0277 I did not know who it was, so I answered it. The guy told me he was from portfolio recovery, so I told him what I have told many other callers from this company, I have no outstanding debt and never have, he has the wrong number. When I did this, he came very abusive, even went as far as to call me a "deadbeat petofile nigger" (yes, I am African American).
Calling the police does absolutely nothing. I think it sucks that I have to change the phome number I have had for over 15 years, but I am out of options I think.
Collection agency - Portfolio something or other.
