They called "This is Jack Richard from the IRS stating there was a legal complaint filed against your identity" of my minor child and to call him back. Since my father is an FBI parole officer, I called him back of course. He hung up quickly hearing that. I helped him out by placing his number on facebook to have other call him.
Yep, same thing happened to me today, June 10 2016--same number, same city. Man with an Indian accent said he was calling from Federal Law Enforcement and was handling a legal case file against me.
"Gary Jones" called me and said he was from "Federal Law Enforcement" and a case file had been opened against me because of some education tax credit. He was transferring me to the officer who had my "case file."
Thanks, Gary, but no thanks.
I just received a call with the same message. He knew the college I had attended and said that I had a federal education student tax that I had not paid and when I told him this wasn't a real thing the caller (from the 'Tax Department' for "General Revenue Service' told me he would have the sheriff at my door in 25 working minutes. He was very aggressive but this definitely smelled like a scam so I took my chance and hung up on him:) Number he called from was 516-214-2215 Garden City, NY
My college student daughter just received call from heavily accented Indian woman(?) named "Danny Williams." "Danny" told daughter she owed $1250 for some sort of education expense tax. "Danny" knew the college daughter attends, and said the form was sent to my daughter months ago and the payment was months overdue. Daughter found something in her spam folder. Daughter freaked out and came to me with the "woman" still on phone (daughter thought it was a man with a high-pitched voice because of name - "Danny" -- sounded female to me). I knew about scams calling and saying you owed taxes -- which isn't what the IRS would do anyway. So, I asked "Danny" from where and for whom she was calling and I asked to speak to her supervisor. She said she was with the "Federal Law Enforcement Department" -- there is no such thing. It took about 5 - 6 minutes to get a street address out of her. I told her a real Law Enforcement Department would be happy to give me their street address. She finally gave me 2233 West Drive, NY, NY. I looked it up on google maps -- it's a Fed Ex shipping center. She never gave me her supervisor's name or put him/her on the phone. I told her I'd call back after checking things out. I am reporting this to FTC on their complaint website.
