Police fund raiser
(610) 492-7387 Live call recorded 24 October 2017 (Solicitation for the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police Foundation)
Caller ID: "Newtown Squa PA"
Live call soliciting donations for the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police Foundation.
Sometimes the only way to get these beggars to stop calling you is to annoy them and cause them to consume too many of their resources to call you, so that they won't want to contact you anymore.
The best way to do that is to offer a generous donation of $300 or more and give them a fake credit card number that passes the Luhn test and appears to be a valid card until they try to secure payment from it. If you are on the phone with them it will drive them crazy reading the digits back to you to make sure they got them correctly, as fake credit card numbers that pass the Luhn test do. After several trials, offer them another card. Give them a second fake credit card number and waste their time some more. Tell them your cards are good, you just used them earlier that day to buy something from Amazon. Finally, they'll volunteer to send you a pledge kit in the US Mail for you to fill out and send back to them. Be sure to give them a fake address to waste their postage. When their pledge kit is returned "Invalid Address", they'll probably call you again and you can offer them yet another fake credit card. It shouldn't take long before they flag your phone number on their predictive dialer and you stop getting calls from them for a year or longer.
Here is a transcript of this intrusive and unwanted solicitation call:
Call is now being recorded.
[me:] Hello?
[male voice 1:] Hello, good afternoon, this is Joel Collins calling for the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police Foundation. The call is recorded for quality assurance. Okay?
[me:] Okay.
[male voice 1:] Sir the reason for my call the PA FOP Foundation just kicked off their fund drive and as a paid fundraiser for Residential Programs we're sending out the new pledge get to all supporting residents. The goal of the drive is to help provide assistance to families and local lodges when FOP members are killed in the line of duty, assist injured, retired and elderly FOP members as well as create and maintain a State Memorial for officers tragicly killed in the line of duty. Now sir, when you receive your pledge kit, can the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police Foundation count on you for a fully tax deductible donation?
[me:] Uh yes of course.
[male voice 1:] How fantastic. Well the top spots for the drive are 95, 75 and 55. Now which one is comfortable for you?
[me:] Uh could you repeat those please?
[male voice 1:] Oh, Uh I was just sayng the top spots for the drive are 95, 75 and 55. Now which one is comfortable for you?
[me:] I I think I would like to contribute more than that. Can I contribute more than $95?
[male voice 1:] Okay, well, we don't want to send it out without an amount printed out that your hundred percent comfortable with, so what what's a minimum amount that you can commit to and then once you receive it if you can give more great, so what's a comfortable amount that you can commit to?
[me:] I would commit to $300.
[male voice 1:] Now let me just ask, are you comfortable with that amount?
[me:] Yes I am.
[male voice 1:] Great. Uh now all I need to do is transfer you over to the records department so they confirm your information and have you on your way, so please stay on the line.
