I can ALMOST guarantee that these calls are from a collection agent, attempting to verify if somebody even *lives* at the number in their records.

This is a very common tactic these bottom-suckers feed upon.

THE FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT makes these types of calls ILLEGAL, and HARASSING in nature. Furthermore, if anybody from these types of places curses you, threatens you, they need to be reported (I think) to the FTC.

But, in order to prove this hypothesis, one would have to receive calls from the actual collection AGENCY that can be tied to these phone calls.

If you have no open collections, then obviously I am wrong, but wanted to get my 2 cents out there...
