If you have ever applied for a payday loan online, or were used as a reference by a friend or family member for one, this group of foreign scam artists will eventually call you from a VOIP number based in the US. They purchase these numbers in bulk from various companies in order to mask the fact that they are not calling from the US, but from another country.

The caller will almost always have a very thick accent of a Middle Eastern or Indian origin, while claiming a very "American" sounding name, like "Steven Taylor", "Steven King", or even the name of a famous American celebrity. Their command and understanding of American English is very poor, and will often result in them using very odd phrases for someone pretending to be a debt collector or law enforcement. (Really, how often does a real debt collector or law enforcement agent use the phrase "good luck and God bless"?)

They will pretend to be a "financial crimes investigator" or "lawyer" (sometimes both) from a fictional collection service or federal law enforcement agency, and attempt to scare you into sending them hundreds of dollars to pay off a non-existent debt. They will threaten to have you arrested within a short period of time at your home or work. They may be very persistent with their calls, and they may attempt to call multiple times a day.

If they leave a message, do not waste your time in calling them back. If you answer their call, do not under any circumstances send them ANY money. A legitimate debt collector does not threaten a debtor with arrest, or pretend to be a member of a law enforcement agency that does not exist. These individuals are not what they claim to be, and are not worth wasting your time.
