Typical Craigslist scam. Wants to buy item from me, and asks when she can come to see it as she is quite concerned if the furniture's condition is as good as advertised. Then she suddenly canNOT come in person and decides the condition is satisfactory as shown in the photos. My ad says I only accept CASH and the asking price is $350; yet the scammer wants to overnight a certified check to me for $1500!!! She says I am to cash the check and keep $500 for myself, with the extra $150 as compensation for the extra things she's instructing me to do. I am to pay the other $1000 to her mover in cash when he arrives to pick up the furniture. I know she is a scammer, though, and that her certified check is fake, so I don't comply; if I followed her orders, then my bank would call (a few days after the mover - who is either the REAL scammer or in cahoots with him - showed up to collect the money and furniture) to tell me the check was fake so I now need to reimburse the bank $1500 - AND my furniture is also gone!!! It doesn't make sense that anyone would pay so much to have used furniture she's never seen shipped across the country when she could buy it new - for less! - in her local area! It also doesn't make sense that she would trust a complete stranger not to just pocket the $1000 intended for the mover and to sell the furniture again to someone else! The only reason the scammer IS willing to do things this way is because she knows, just as I do, that the check is fake. In other words, she isnt risking anything. Hopefully, now you know not to risk dealing with this scammer either.
Rod, don't do it! It is a typical Craigslist scam. Your bank will cash the check - before it clears - and then the buyer will want you to hand a large amount in cash over to pay a moving company to take your bed/mattress. Then a few days later, your bank will contact you to say the check was fake, and that you need to repay them the entire check amount ASAP. Now you no longer have anything to sell AND you owe your bank a bunch of money you don't have!!! Plus, think about it: Does it make any sense that someone would be willing to pay you MORE than you asked for furniture to be shipped quite a distance? Whether the bed/mattress are new or used, the scammer could definitely buy them much cheaper in his own local area ... You wouldn't pay that kind of money for what you are selling, would you? And you definitely wouldn't trust someone you had never met to actually hand over the shipping amount IN CASH to the moving company. So why does the scammer trust you to do that? It's because he isn't sending you a real check, so he isn't risking a penny. Your furniture isn't anything rare, is it? And once you actually cash the check, the scammer will make up some reason to rush you into paying his moving company before the bank knows the check is fake; he HAS TO do this because he knows the bank WILL contact you soon with that news, after which he won't get anything out of you. The situation does NOT make sense. And I bet that he originally planned to meet you in person to examine the furniture to verify it's still in good condition, and to pay cash for it right then ... and then he came up with some sudden reason why he couldn't do so, and also suddenly decided he was fine with the condition without seeing it, right? Tell your scammer to send the payment to you IN CASH; he can just as easily overnight cash to you as he can a fake certified check. Or, if you want to have a bit of fun with him, tell him after his check arrives that you've decided you are keeping all the money after you "cash" the fake certified check. He will pretend to get angry and threaten to call the police, but he knows he can't really do so because HE is the one trying to commit fraud. But whatever you do, do NOT follow the scammer's instructions because you will regret it if you do!!!
Craigslist Scam

I have been receiving text from this phone # wanting to know if I will take a certified check for a bed and mattress set I am selling. I told her that I would as long as the check clears first.
