I also just received a phone call from a man with an Indian accent, that said his name was John McKay, saying that he was from Microsoft Windows. Red flag right there. So we hung up. He called right back, so I answered. He went on to say that someone highjacked my computer and proceeded to give me a license i.d. Then he screwed up again and said that my license was registered in my wife's name. Haha. My wife doesn't even use the computer. They got our phone number from the phone directory which is in my wife's name. He then asked me to turn on my computer, which was already on. At this point I told him to send me an email if he was legit, told him that I was a Microsoft partner and was fed up playing his little game and hung up. Guess what ? No email.. Note to everyone out there, Microsoft will never, I repeat, never call you regarding any technical issues regarding their products They will contact you via email. And even then that's a slim chance.. Stay safe . Don't fall for stupid games like these.
I had a man call with an Indian accent and say "your computer is infected. It is our job to call you when our servers have been notified that you have a virus. You must go to your computer now!" I knew something was wrong right away because Microsoft doesn't make house calls. I told him I'd call him back and he said "this virus needs to be resolved in 30 minutes."
TOTAL SCAM! He said his name was Steve Hartford, but I doubt it.
I had same call but I did not get on my computer, so I don't no if it was acurrate
10-30-14. The Hackers that called me, showed phone ID as: Out of Area 1. They convinced me they were Microsoft and as the call progressed they tried to Blackmail me into purchasing a Security Program and when I refused they were going to Crash my computer.
I requested a name and they gave me a name of: Shawn Marshall and a phone number 1-800-287-4081. I am not sure this number they gave me works, I will not call it to check.
I disconnect from my Service Provider and shut down my computer. I had been Hacked big time!
I had my hard drive wiped and am backup and running.
I feel like an idiot but I did have computer issues several days before they called, so they convinced me they were Microsoft!
I tried reporting this to the Police, Service Provider and the Phone Company, but since is was not ID theft, they were not interested!
Do not respond to Out of Area 1, or any number that says, Out of Area with a number behind it.
