This is a valid number from Chase. I made a few large transactions online and got a call from this number about 30 minutes later. The only thing that I have to provide to verify identity is the zip code. It then stated the amount of the transfer (which matches what I did online) and the bank the money was going to and asked me to verify if it was correct.
got a call from this number when I made large online transaction.
Here's what happened...(all from an automated system; no human interaction)
1. asked for my postal code associated with bank account
2. asked to verify the amount and recipient name of latest transaction.
No password or any account details asked.
I called the number on the back of my bank card and they did indeed verify that 800-366-1962 was a Chase Fraud Prevention number. I did this because of the very strange "confirm identity" dance I previously encountered when calling 800-366-1962. I had called the number out of curiosity after a caller left a message stating they were Chase (something to do with Fraud) and to call back with the reference # left on the message. Of course a computer answered and I put in the reference # as requested and verified my name. A recorded message then asked me to confirm my identify by listening to several recorded choices regarding where I lived, then choices as to where I worked, which company my mortgage is with, which county I reside in, and the state my SS was issued. It all seemed very odd since I called from the number on my account to begin with. I did not confirm any of the questions and it transferred me to a human which asked for my birth date. "Sorry can't give you that, but I have a reference #". She very politely put me on hold and came back and told me they were going to refer me to the branch with two forms of ID. At this point is when I called the number on the back of my card who confirmed the 800 number and then transferred me to them. At this point they wanted to confirm my identify by sending a text w/ a code to my cell number which IS NOT in their system. I declined because I like to keep that private. They would not emaiI and said a text was the only way. STRANGE way of doing fraud prevention in my opinion. I still have no idea what/why the call was for since recent transfers and quick pay went through. So there you have it. The so-called identity question choices seemed liked they were straight out of one of those people finder websites. Again STRANGE. I would never give personal info to a number left on my machine and only called out of curiosity as to their scam. Supposedly there was none.
Called the real chase and they verified the number. The fraud prevention department calls to verify any large transactions.
Automated call claimed they were from Chase Fraud Prevention and that my card had been compromised. Gave a number to call back with a reference number.
Called the real Chase and they said it was a scam.
