I just got a call from here, too. Just an empty line, no one talked to me or anything.
Decided to do a whois lookup on their website, found this funny:

Stop calling me! I am sick of them...

Thanks to all of you for your research, but I am hesitant to call "Mike" to have our number taken off the do not call list, because by doing so, they can say that I willingly gave them my number and they have the right to call me.
BUT however, the next time they do call, I will request then to speak to the supervisor to ask them to remove our number. Also, ALL of the proceeds of the donations should go directly to the foundation, and it SHOULD be run by volunteers that want to help and NOT make a buck!

I received a call request yesterday to assist cancer patients with a donation of $50, $40, $25 or any amount. I asked the very pleasant sounding lady if she was a professional fund raiser and was told, "I'm a paid employee of the Cancer Fund of America." I asked her if my area would benefit from the donation and was told that it was national and would benefit this area based upon need. Basically, I now know that that was an evasion. I asked how much was used for administrative costs and was told something that I accepted as a reasonable answer. I can't recall exactly what the answer was. Bottom line is that she convinced me that their organization was on the up and up and did a great deal to assist hospice patients with supplies that they could not afford. This morning I was making out my check so that it would be ready as soon as the pledge envelope came but somelthing told me to look up their number. That's when I found this site. I've called "Mike" and left message to take my donation off the books as I was not going to send it. Thank you for the information you give here; especially Bob who did all the research!!

Picked up and talked with a cheerful woman who explained that they are a non-profit that raises money to fund supplies that get sent to cancer patients. I asked for a website to look at: www.cfoa.org. She also told me that as a non-profit they are exempt from no-call lists.

Charity Navigator shows that they spend about 75% of their revenue on fund raising, which is poor for a charity. CN's rating for this group is zero. In 2007 they took in over $8 million, and spent over $6 milion on fund raising, presumably mostly in the form of direct mail. Their director of fund raising had a salary of $144 thousand that year.

They did spend about 20% on program delivery (i.e., what they claim to in existence for) which isn't peanuts but the percentage is very low. My advice: stay very far away from this outfit.

Found the Cancer Fund of America website (http://www.cfoa.org) and a contact number of 1-800-578-5284. Spoke to a Mike Reynolds who claimed to be the Fund Raising Manager and he assured me I will be added to the Do Not Call list. We'll see.

1800-390-4812 calls several times a day! Rings 3 times and disconnects but if you pick up the phone, no one is there. I am on the DO NOT CALL list but nothing helps.
