yes the same type of call today

On Monday morning, Sept. 28, 2026, a lady with an understandable accent, called me on my cell phone while I was in my car. The caller ID said 1-800-528-4800. It was on the car speaker phone. She said she was calling from the American Express fraud department because they were concerned about a recent charge of $800 on my American Express credit card. I told her that was a concern alright, but told her that I never had had an American Express credit card and didn’t now. She responded by stating that someone probably got the card using stolen data. She then proceeded to give me my full name and cell phone number and asked if they were correct. They were, but I didn’t answer her question. I’m still wondering where she got my info from. She then said that there were several charges on the card done in NY, PA, and TX. The one in TX was the $800 one. I then asked her what was the maximum that could be charged to the card. She hesitated for a moment, like she had to think one up, and then said $5000. I am aware that the Fair Credit Reporting Act limits fraudulent credit card charges to $50, but I did become somewhat concerned by then and told her she should immediately close the card out. She responded by saying that she couldn’t do that, that I had to do that “from my end”. That immediately made me suspicious, because it didn’t make sense if she was calling from the credit card company that she couldn’t close out the account. So I then said the she should immediately freeze the account. She said she couldn’t do that either for the same reason stated above. She then asked if I had a computer and if so I should go to it. That was probably how she planned on showing me how to “close it from my end” and thereby obtain more of my personal info. By then it became obvious that it was a scam, so to play along with her I again demanded that she close the credit card account. She then became angry and loudly stated, ‘Don’t you understand English? I can’t close the account from my end”. I then loudly stated that she was a scammer and she immediately hung up. It was a very sophisticated and slick routine on her part. She never skipped a beat during our entire discussion.

Interestingly enough, I later went to the American Express web site and the phone number that was on the caller ID when she called was the correct phone number for American Express customer service. It was obviously a fake number display that concealed the real number she was calling from. Interesting how they can do that. So I then independently called the American Express customer service number and talked with an American Express rep and told her what happened. She asked for my name and SS number and said that there was no account or card under that ID. She did say there were many identical names like mine and asked for my middle initial. That didn’t show anything either. She said it was a scam and that if I get a statement in the mail I should call them again and they would deal with it.
I was later thinking that I have all my credit bureau accounts frozen, so nobody could have created a new American Express credit card anyway like she contended.

Claimed a charge in a faraway state. I was suspicious as the call did not come in with an AMEX heading on the call. Asked me to type in some info to my server. I did not and told him that we were done and hung up.

This number contacted me and wanted to verify I charged $900 to a flight in Dubai. He became belligerent. Wanted me to verify the first 6 digits on my card and expiration date.
