What are Government Scam Calls?

Spam calls or robocalls that are claiming to be from a government agency in order to obtain money or private information are called "government scams". The most common government scam call is where the caller pretends to be a tax collector from the IRS, in which they ask you to send money to a bank account in order to not be arrested. It is important to note that this is not the way the IRS gets money from people who owe taxes or from people who have committed tax fraud, so do not believe these callers. Other agencies that robocalls pose as are the FBI, police departments, the Social Security Administration, and others. When people make these calls and pose as government agencies, they are breaking the law and have poor intentions. The best way to ensure you are not getting scammed is to call the government agency the caller is claiming to be apart of directly, and ask them if you truly are wanted for tax fraud, a crime, etc. The real employee from the organization will be able to confirm if you are speaking to a scammer or not. If you are, you should hang up and block the caller from contacting you again.

No message but I wrote down the number to report it. Caller ID just said Toll-Free. I don't answer my phone anymore. Why can't anybody stop these calls?

09-14-2017 - Have been receiving multi phone calls from 1-800-531-5000. Finally answered the call and was told that Directv had a promotion that would lower my bill to $69.99 a month, but had to prepay 4 months to get this discounted price. If I agreed by this evening, I could also get a $100 gift card. I asked them to send details to my account where I could see the terms and conditions. They asked for my email and that confirmed that they were scammers from India since ATT already has my email.

Knew up front it was a scam-marketer when I saw the phone number that I did not recognize. My famous line for them is "Morticia's Mortuary. May I help you." They immediately hang up without answering. I'll keep doing this until they get the message, which doesn't take anymore than 3 more tries from the scam artist to get it.

BE CAREFUL! Called from Directv number (800-531-5000) and said they were with Directv and had a special promotion of $59.99 for the next two years plus a $100 gift card if you pay for 5 months up front (TODAY!). They had some basic information (address) of mine. Hung up and called Directv to ask if that was a current promotion and they have no record of it. Was told they just received another call from a customer who received that same pitch. Just make sure you ASK QUESTIONS when receiving calls like that.

I'm a new Direct TV client. They wanted to know what my bills was, if I was an AT&T customer too and if I had a bundle deal. They offered to beat my current rate by $20 if I paid 6 months up front for a total of $325 and they would give me $100 VISA gift card. The new rate would be good for 2 years. My first bill be received in August for the new lower amount. I asked what the catch was. The guy has a very heavy accent. He kept on repeating that I wasn't to pay him but to call the "Billing Department of Direct TV". I've since received 2 more calls from this number in about 30 minute intervals. I've blocked the number.

Caller I.D. "toll-free-number 1-800-531-5000". Have received 7 calls from this number about every 15 mins so far this morning. On call block now.

I heard a lot of static on the phone and someone with a heavy accent started rattling off something so I just started pressing buttons.

Got call was ask to present $300. up front, for promo to get 59.99 for 2 yrs., so hung up called DIRECT TV, ask if they had a promo or anything like that...they said ....NO, NO!!!

Got the same call all day yesterday about 20 phone calls and offered the same plus a 100.00 visa card if I paid upfront. Crazy

I recieved the same phone calls today - about 15 to 20 times on my cell while I was in class. They called about every 30 minutes. They levet a 3 minute voicemail with nothing but static. I finally answered and they hung up. 20 minutes later they called back and tried offering this BS of a "deal." I told the heavy-accented male on the other line that I would do some online research and get back with him if I decided to take the offer. He got upset and hung up. SCAM indeed.

i just had the same experience this morning. I have Direct TV programmed in my phone (the 800-531-5000 is their number) but scammers have equipment or ways to use that number even when they are not part of DTV - they wanted $300 now and me not receive another bill for 5 months and I would then be locked into the $59.99 rate - after I asked a zillion questions, we strangely got "cut off" I called Direct TV and they said it was not them - they never ask for upfront payments like that . . .
