Had a message yesterday, so I called, did not provide the account info requested, but then they provided an option to provide last 5, last 4 of SSN, and billing zip. When I called AmEx today, they had no record of calls to me, but their system also provided the same option so whoever did this just copied AmEx's system. AmEx noted that I had a scam call and will flag my account for any suspicious activity.

While this is a real American Express number it is not Amex calling you. What is misunderstood is the fallout from the 1986 telecom breakup combined with the advancement in IP based telecommunications. Anyone can obtain a North American telephone number from an IP telephony provider, connect a software based telephone system such as Asterisk (FrèePBX) to the provider and transmit ANY caller ID information through the North American telephone system without restriction. As an Internet provider and ex-telephony expert I can assure you I have fully tested this through the network. I can send any name and number such as a police department, government agency, company or even your name and number as my caller ID. This is a legislation issue and it will take a grass roots effort to resolve. Right now any foreign criminal can rent a server from a hosting provider, install asterisk, obtain a NA phone number and robo dial any list including the easily obtained Do Not Call list and transmit any caller ID they want in an effort to trick you into giving valuable information. Rule #1. If anyone ever calls you and asks for any personal information, do not give it. If you think it's a legitimate call, look up the number and call back the real person, company or agency. You'll discover they never call and ask for personal information. Best wishes, David Kopacz, CTO @ ASPwebhosting.com.

These jerks keep calling me relentlessly. I wish the FTC would DO SOMETHING. I don't have an American Express card, never had one, and don't ever want one. I owe nothing to them. It's a real shame you can't even have a telephone without being bothered by people after your money all day. I am so sick of it.

This is a HIGH LEVEL SCAM! It is FRAUD...please read!!! American Express is confused, and doesn't know how to handle this fraudulent set up. I've spoken the Amex cust. service 5 times (the # on the back of the card) about this issue. Amex will tell you that 800-592-1160 is a real Amex #, part of their Credit Services Dept. What Amex doesn't understand, and they can't seem to confirm, is that 800-592-1160 has been stolen from them. Scammers are using it for caller ID, and are calling people using the number. When you call 800-592-1160 back, it sounds just like the real Amex, but it isn't. They are just trying to get your cc or ssn # and personal info. I spoke with Amex Credit Services Dept. and confirmed my account is in good standing. Credit Services has no record of ever calling me, and did not even have my phone # on record. However I have rec'd 17 calls from 800-592-1160, all saying they are Amex. They have asked for relatives who have died, and ones that don't live with me, etc. I've reported the problem to Amex upper mgmt, but they seem unwilling to help...got no follow-up or repsonse from Amex. We are on our own to deal with these scammers. Whenever 800-592-1160 calls me now, I use an air horn on them...and hopefully it is destroying their ear drums.

Caller asked for my credit card number. Did not say what company they were calling from so there was no way in hell they were going to get my number. Called the BBB and reported it so now they will look into the matter and follow up on it. How stupid do they think people are? Must have no life to work for a company as low life as this one. No self esteem whatsoever. Very sad life and existence..

called this and some guy (obvs. from india) picked up and said "hello?"yeah that's real legit & professional....so i played along. first he asked for my CC # and i gave him 1111-0000-1111-0000. he told me it wasnt a valid card number. i said no shit, you think i'm going to give over my CC # for someone who randomly called me? next, he asked for my SSN. i said a few choice words and demanded he remove me from his list. it probably didn't do much good for me to request though.
