I have two problems with this: a) No matter how within the law a survey company itself may be, in an era when the Russian government wears quite a variety of masks, posing itself as being various commercial corporations, news organizations, public interest groups, etc., who knows what the client who commissioned the survey intends to do with the information? Or what other parties they may eventually sell it to? b) The counter argument - to the claim made by some that it is against both science and commerce to disrespect phone survey companies - is that phone surveys are the really cheap way to conduct surveys. There are other, more expensive, but arguably higher quality survey methods. If science and/or commerce are desperate for that information, that only a survey can provide, they could simply pay more, and quite probably get better quality results, rather than hide behind the letter of the law while inflicting intrusive random prodding on the populace, day by day, in perpetuity, through the bargain basement version of surveying.

ASDE ONLY wants to know if your number is a working number. It provides 'samples' to people performing research. 'Samples' means a list of working phone numbers so we (people performing research about people) don't waste time calling dead numbers. Like SOOOOOOOOOOOO many people let me guess- you didn't answer and only assumed its "some scammers out to get you". Drink more water and get some exercise. Scammers ask for NON DEMOGRAPHIC information (Demographic information does not affect your privacy at all but is required for science, this is male/female, age, job type, etc. Just facts about you- but heres the thing no one knows; We don't save your precious names - WE DONT CARE what your sacred name is, its about numbers. 12,000 people of this age think this, 1,000 of this age think this other thing, and the second I import your data into the database you are not Andy Leo, you are 37T74EKP or 83G45JFS. So really all we know is the age, gender, zip code etc of 83G45JFS and I do not know why people freak out about this. It is online where your privacy is stolen. Actual researchers are just doing their jobs, which usually involves making your life better and you just whine and whine and whine

OK. It is not Tele- MARKETING since nothing is being MARKETED. If you need to label it would be a robo-call. ASDE is checking if your number is in service, that's all. The message when you call back, for obvious legal reasons, offers you recourse to have your number removed from -commercial- calls. Its not "asking you" to be on it. What do you think the scam is?
