011-800-772-1413 (Foreign Coded technology to bypass your Caller ID Block) Okay. Here's some info. on Portfolio Recovery. They are persistent and have oodles of phone numbers. Some numbers have US area codes. Some calls actually ID them as Portfolio Recovery. A lot of calls do not have any ID except the area code and a phone number. This 800-772-1413 has been getting through call-blocking efforts. AT&T explained that the actual number being used by these scum is 011-800-772-1413. The 011 is out of the US and is a roundabout way of coming through as a US caller. BECAUSE PORTFOLIO USES 13 NUMBERS INSTEAD OF 10 NUMBERS IT CANNOT BE BLOCKED BY AT&T. I don't know if any phone provider can successfully block it or any other numbers they use with a foreign prefixing code. AT&T had to look it up for me because only the 800-772-1413 showed in my Caller ID window. The only defense is to let it ring and not call-back. Truthfully, every phone number not known personally should be Googled before answering and never returned to the caller. Portfolio does not care if you are the one they're looking for. They'll keep calling. God help you if you are a relative or have the same surname! Remember, they have lots of people in lots of areas with lots of phone numbers at their disposal. If you have satisfied the debt, it still makes no difference. They will get you to give information and go after the excused portion. Any information or acknowledgment from you is noted and they step-up their efforts. (Save every piece of paper you have on satisfied debts. It will give you some peace, because they WILL KEEP CALLING.) If everyone wises up and refuses to answer any unknown caller, perhaps some of the collectors, scammers and sales boiler-rooms will cease to exist. Technology has given us the power to refuse intrusion. Use it. (BTW there are multiple collectors, scammers and boiler-room operations using Foreign Prefixing to avoid discovery. It seems to be rampant. I Google everything. Everyone is a potential target.) Check out all the "Caller Information" sites like this one. The stories will make you strong.

Thanks for the further info. We contacted our phone company. They told us they know about this. They have had a very large portion of their customers complain. And they can only offer to change our number with "no gaurantees" on the number either. So, we have chosen to become a house without a phone. We doubt this is going to help anyone else, but realistically, having a phone bill so that someone can call me 4 times or more a day looking to scam me is wrong.

This company is determined to have me change my number just so that I don't dread hearing it ring. My husband and I are fed up with trying to get a human being to acknowledge that they have the wrong person/ number. Instead, they have found a scam around it.... they call from at least 4 numbers..

Some say Portfolio Recovery, others just say Toll Free. Only one message was ever left and that was the first call 5 minutes after we had our phone turned... why was 1 hour after we moved here. Crazy. Make it stop.

This company has called us under at least 4 different numbers. The day we got this phone number 3 months ago this company called and called every day that I can remember since. They just have an automated message whether you answer or not. We have left messages that they have the wrong person, but obviously they get paid to dial regardless. If my husband's job did not demand that we have a home phone we would turn it off. I dread hearing my phone ring, and I haven't even done anything. Ridiculous. BONUS: I tried the *60 through my phone service, they do no offer it for some of the numbers that they call from, only the "800" toll free lines. Crazy.

The bastard that had this phone number 11 years ago is still giving the number when he gets loans, merchandise, etc.

We've had the (unlisted, supposedly) number for approx. 11 years and still get occasional calls for this local bum, has really been a lot of calls April 2010.

I tell these collectors that this is not said bastards' number, has not been for years but they still keep calling. Guess they think I'm lying, what can a person do? I will not change the number we've had so long.

If you have call blocking with your phone company.
The next time they call... you can hang up then dial the *60 code or what ever your phone comp has and tell it to block the last calling party. Then when they call it will just go to a recording and is done.
May be worth a try.

Some bitch from this place called asking for someone that does not live here. When I advised her of that, she lied, telling me this number was given as an alternate number. I told her, "You're lying." She was lying...and then she got nasty. I told her “never call again.”

Why doesn't the FCC do their job?
