THIS IS NOT A SCAM AND COULD HELP YOU FROM BEING SCAMMED. I returned this call today and the lady did ask for my social# I told her I was not comfortable giving it and asked that she explain the reason for the call. She did so and told me she could look up the info with the telephone number. I gave it to her and then she said it was for an account for a Pamela Sweeney, I told her I did not know anyone with that name and gave her my name (Initials A.D.) She removed my number from that persons account. This tells me someone probably got into my student records at college. This person thought they were slick. I know this because my moms initials are P.S. in fact her last name is Sweeney but her name is totally different from Pamela, however, my mom did co-sign on my student loan. So I guess they thought that if they used a name close enough they could be seen as on of her kids? Anyway they fouled up when they put my number, I called my mom and she said she knows no one by the name of Pamela and she never been to college a day in her life and she has no loans at all. So I was glad I called before they garnish my tax return as other are saying they can do. I can't afford to take any chances, there are scammers out there but these people will help you discover them.

from US DEPT OF EDUCATION REGARDING STUDENT RECORD,THEN ASK FOR SSN#,HOME#.THEN SHE ASKED ME IF I KNEW JENNIFER LEE.I REPLIED I DON'T KNOW HER.
Seriously? People gave them their SSN?
They are a SCAM. Couple reasons why:
1. They call you. When you answer, they leave a message asking you to call THEM back.
2. They ask for your SSN first thing. NOBODY should ask you this unless they either already have it and can prove it to you or they are few of the the extremely legit companies (banks). Either way, they should prove that they have SOME information on you.
3. Those who gave their SSN were told the call was a "mistake" and those who gave their phone # had the same experience too.
My call: I called them back, got on the phone with a lady. This is how it went:
Lady: Hi, Direct loans service. Can I have your SSN # please?
Me: I'm sorry, I'm not comfortable with that. Who are you guys again?
Lady: May I have your SSN# please?
Me: What does this entail?
Lady: May I have your SSN# please?
Me: I'm not comfortabl......
Lady: Hi, I work for direct loans. May I have your SSN# please?
Me: I said tha-----
She hung up on me
They are not a scam. They are debt collections for student loans for direct loans. Your SSN is your account number. The rep you spoke with should have asked for your name or phone number to look up your account instead of just asking for the SSN over again. From the sounds of it she probably couldn't hear you due to a bad connection, because after 3 attempts of communication if you don't respond they will hang up. There are other people who actually care enough about their student loans to pay them or know the phone number at least for the company they owe them to which they have to help and your ignorance is wasting their time.
To "bob"- I got a call from this number too but didn't answer. I looked it up and found it was supposedly from a student loan debt. I found my student loan info on a letter I had received a long time ago from my loan institute. I called them and they said a BIG NO that the person that called me was not them and that it was a scam. My student loans were fine and I wasn't behind. They said this number wasn't even them. So I wouldn't assume that people just aren't paying their loans and that this was legit when you don't know. I called and they made it very clear this was a scam and not connected with them. I have no other loans and I was not behind so I know this to be true.
I would also like to note that I've also been told that any website connected to this number is also not really a direct loans website. The website itself is a fake and scam. Many people are reporting it. Please don't think that just because you found the number on what appears to be a legit site that it means it's real. Find a letter you've gotten in the mail from your loans place and call them. They will always send you a warning in the mail about loan debt and they will tell you that this number is NOT them.
Call regarding my federal student loan - I have none. To be removed from their list you need to call back to their number - when you do there is a six minute wait to be connected. I thought that robodials to mobile phones needed to provide an "opt-out" during the call, which this organization does not.
