I have been getting this number calling me numerous time over the past week. I am traveling overseas and I didn't recognize the number so I never picked it up. I thought it strange that this number keeps on calling me but never leaves a message. I decided to look up this number and I found this forum! I am so glad I know to block it!
They've called me 5 times today but I was at work so I didn't answer. I called the number back and it said it was Costco's Anywhere card. Then the automated system asked me for the last four on my card, I provided it. Automated system said it didn't recognize it so please enter it again. I provided the last 4 again. Didn't recognize it. Then the automated system said, "let's try this another way, please provide your FULL credit card number." And that is when I said NOPE and hung up. I called CITI using the number on the back of my card. The CITI representative said that my account was in good standing and they hadn't made any outbound calls to me and had no reason to. She also stated that any legitimate outbound calls made by CITI will never ask for secure information.
TL;DR Definitely a phishing scam, confirmed with CITI (using number on the back of my card) that they haven't made any outbound calls to me.
They called, their English was pretty good. However they made mistakes, e.g. They asked if I was "my first name" then said who they were and why they were calling. Normally they'd ask by saying my First Name, Last Name. I asked the lady if she knew how to spell SCAM? She said yes and I hung up.
I have gotten this call at least once per day over the past week and a half:
Automated female voice: "Thank you for being part of the Citibank family. This is just a reminder that if you've had automatic or reoccurring payments set up with American Express, in order to continue making automatic payments, you will need to reestablish automatic payments directly with Citibank. We know you are busy, but if you could please take a few minutes to login at www.citicards.com (but sounded like "www.ccards.com", to review your Costco Anywhere Visa Card account status, it would be appreciated. If you would prefer to call us, please feel free as it's always great to get a chance to speak with one of our valued clients. Our toll-free number is 1-855-805-5486. Once again, thanks for being a valued Citibank customer."
Finally, today, I called them from another phone. The automated voice that answered asked "please speak or touch tone your credit card number now". When I did nothing, it transferred me, but asked for me to have my credit card or social security number handy. The (human) lady on the phone was not convincing and asked for my phone number. I still refused. I played the voice mail above for her. She said that it was indeed Citibank and this is their "Customer Service" phone number. She finally suggested that I call the phone number on the back of my credit card when I would not give her any more information.
So, I did. They confirmed that the calls were coming from Citibank - and, in fact, that we are past due. They were checking to see if had set up automatic payments with American Express because that information did not transfer to Citibank from AmEx. Everybody would have to re-set-up their automatic payments. He confirmed that it was "www.citicards.com" and not "www.ccards.com"
I will do that online with my known Citibank website. It sure sounded just like a scam until the end though.
Bottom line: Call the number on the back of your credit card. Simple as that.
They keep trying to call us but our robocall blocker sends them to Neverland. I will look into my account as others have suggested.
