This company uses this area code from Florence, KY, it is just one of the many, many area codes that they use to make it seem like it is different companies calling.

One of the 64 phone numbers for Portfolio. Trying to collect on a debt from 1986. My phone will self-explode before I will answer. Never, never engage in conversation with these people. If I don't know a number, it can ring to hell freezes over.

That's exactly how I feel! If calls come up private, unavailable or Small Town, USA, I do not answer them. They can call every 5 minutes and I will not answer. They don't leave messages either so apparently it's not important.

Yep, this number is the infamous Portfolio Recovery Associates. Below is a meticulously researched list of every number they have called me from over the last 12 months. If your technology allows, pre-load these numbers for blocking to stop them in advance. If not, consider moving your number to one of the voice-over-ip internet phone providers that typically DO offer the ability for long blocking lists. I use voipo.com. Your annual phone bill is usually lower too.
BOW BEFORE ME PORTFOLIO RECOVERY!

Received a call from them today using an 859 KY #. They must have numbers all over the states. I said do not call this # again and hung up. I will report them.

Junk Debt Buyers - a growing slime pit

There's a thriving industry of debt buyers who purchase very old and long-neglected debts for pennies on the dollar. They tack on fees and interest, and then try to collect the entire amount for the full amount plus interest.

They're junk debt buyers, and while their business isn't necessarily wrong or illegal, their practices often are. Problem is, a lot of debt buying firms are bottom-feeding scumbags who will resort to any sleazy tactic to make a buck, and have no respect for the law. Specifically the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which they regularly abuse, taking advantage of consumers' ignorance of their rights and timidity when confronted by tough collectors.

Their secret is, they purchase old, bad debts that the original creditor wrote off as un-collectable, and then pursue them years later when your credit score has come back up. See, they aren't stupid. If you're the same 420-credit score who never paid that bill for the last 10 years, they won't waste your time. But if you've gone on to purchase a home and clean up your act and you're now enjoying a 650-plus score, you're their prime target. These debtors, they (correctly) reason, are more likely to settle up these old debts now that they've achieved some financial security. Especially when the collector has illegally re-aged the account and brought the debtor's credit score crashing to earth.

Never take calls from Portfolio recovery. If you do they will call you even more. They buy old debt that they can not sue you for, then keep calling to pressure you to pay written off old junk debt. Stay off the phone with this lot.
