What is a "Government Scam" Robocall?

Scammers who call people posing as a government agency are commonly referred to as "government scams". There are many different agencies these callers pose as, but they most commonly pose as the IRS. They say you have not paid your taxes and are wanted by the government. These calls can be very convincing, as they will usually have your name and home address, but they will request your social security number and sometimes even your bank information. There are other government agencies these scammers pose as, such as your local police department, the Social Security Administration, and Medicare. When people pose as government agencies, they are violating the law and should be reported immediately. If you are unsure if you are truly talking to a legitimate government agency or not, you can hang up the call, and call the real agency. Let them know you received a call asking for your information, and you want to be sure it wasn’t a scam call. The agency will be able to tell you if you are actually in trouble with them or not.

Called about a totally non-emergency. Wanting you to believe that the call was from the county government about some drug treatment program. This is either a scam or government running amuck.

Forgot to add to original posting. True that it was a ROBO Call, however the call was received at 15:02 hrs. EDT. Again is was 100% legit. This is a free service that is offered to the residents of Johnston County NC., from the Johnston County Sheriff's Office/Emergency Communications Center.

Additionally we were asked if we wanted to sign up for this free service. A very valuable service.

Message giving local town number (number and extension given) to provide information for Code Red or go to local website to do same. I don't know what "information" they expect to get from me. My son is with the police dept. so I will query him as to legitimacy.

Call is legit. It's a recorded message alerting people in the neighborhood to a man who has gone missing. I had it blocked and called the number out of curiosity and got the recording.

866 419 5000 Spouse received a call about what to do if a tornado strikes on a perfectly clear day with a "high overhead" the only thing that might would be a "dust devil" . Researched it and most of the calls made were not in sync with the surrounding events. I can't say if its a scam, prank call or not or not but if it is legit then 80% call are out of sync with the surrounding events. This raises another concern"how easy would it be to hack into emergency systems. It is better to do something than to worry about it.

NOT SCAM an true EMERGENCY ALERT. Received recorded call from Local Sheriff Dept. about pending blizzard to hit my area. First time ever receiving an Emergency Alert....was kinda cool. But I don't live in a box, I knew long before the phone call about the approaching snow of 2+ feet.

I had a call at 1:40am. Recorded message about a missing teen my local police dept was looking for, and to call 911 if seen. Well-meaning, I'm sure, but calling people at 1:40 in the morning?! Not to mention, I never signed up to receive these calls.

What was the end result of the “missing teen?"
Was it a serious event, or a kid home late from prom?

A lot of people have said this is a legitimate reverse 911 call. I have received legitimate reverse 911 calls and they don't come from a toll free number, they come from the county sheriff. I believe this is some kind of come-on, but I can't prove it. The one I just got left a message about testing the system, if this had been an actual emergency... then it cut off. The caller ID said "Emergency Comm" and listed the 866 number.

This number is a recorded emergency alert notification system used by a local college to notify residents of any emergency or siren testing that is being done at the school. The school is Bridgewater State University. They left a message letting us know they are testing the alarms. It was not a scam.

Recorded message saying several sinkholes had opened up in the area overnight and to check to make sure there were no cracks in ones floors or walls. If so, to call 911.

This is an idiotic way to clue people to the system, however.
SIren testing needs an alert?

I got one of these calls & eventually called back - it was a TEST of the CODE RED system in th local community, by way of Kansas City area call center.

White pages & Yellow pages online have no information for the number. You would think there ought to be an identifier of what sort of emergency embedded in the number - personal, missing person, weather or utilities/area emergency, or whether a cometary event was imminent.

I got that call number 866-419-5000. It showed on my VP. I googled it and found this. Oh, that's a scam. Please keep spread word around to watch out for that number. Why not Federal Bureau of Investigation to check it out?

The call woke us up at 2:27am. It was an Amber Alert. It said it was from our county. It is now close to 2 hours later and I still can't get back to sleep. I'm an epileptic and need my sleep. Why call when most people are sleeping? I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of my landline with hopes that they won't get my cell number.

I wrote the above statement. They didn't actually say Amber Alert. I just assumed because the caller was describing what someone was wearing and if we see the person to call our Sheriff's Dept. Other than that I don't know what was said because the call woke me up & I was groggy. Was this a legit call? I checked my Sheriff's page and it didn't have any alerts. Oh, and I'm still awake from that call 3 hours later (sigh)
