Any call from this number comes an inmate at a correctional facility. You should always answer the call to see if it is someone that you know.
This call is not a scam, it is a legitimate company. If you want to know more about them, call the number back or look them up on the internet using the info at the end of this comment.
I copied and pasted the majority of what is in this comment directly from the Securus website. I do not work for them. I just had the idea to go there and find out who they really are and post it here so that all of you can become more knowledgeable.
I personally do not like the prices that Securus Technologies charges for the inmate calls, but it is what it is and Securus Technologies is not the only Correctional Phone Service out there. There are plenty more. They not only provide the phone service, but they also provide the equipment to record all of the calls in case there is something that they or you say that can be used against them.
The correctional facility also gets a percentage of every dollar spent. If you go to www.securustech.net, click on the tab for Correctional Staff. There is advertising to get more business from more jails. Interesting.
A recording gives the inmate a chance to speak their name so that you can hear it and know who is calling you from jail.
The recording also tells you in the first sentence which facility that the inmate is calling from, but you have answer the call to hear it. If the call goes to voice mail, then the first part of the recording is cut off and most likely you will never hear or know which jail the call is coming from or the name of the person who is calling.
The majority of these calls are collect. If you do not want to accept the call, you do not have to and you will not be charged if you do not press 1 to accept the call.
Some of the calls from this number are not collect calls. Even if the inmate has money in their account and uses that money to make calls or purchase phone cards, the call is still routed through and recorded by the equipment that Securus Technologies, Inc. provides to the jail with their service. So you may be getting a 'free' call from an inmate in jail.
Some inmates incorrectly dial the phone number that they are trying to reach or do not remember the number of the person that they want to call. They do not have access to their belongings, including their cell phones, and probably do not remember everyone's phone number. So it is very possible that it is a wrong number. If you want to block it, follow the instructions at the end of this comment or call the number below. It is not very difficult. If you don't understand the instructions, call the number and someone will help you to do it.
