got a call from some one at 866 847 1251 and I cant afford the call because i dont have a credit card is there a way i can write a letter or the person have internet there?

This is a real business. In many prisons/jails it is the only way an inmate can contact their family & friends.

I just spoke with a friend who was arrested out of state & wanted us to know he was ok, but detained. The part where he said his name was *very garbled* & hard to understand (but since no one had heard from him in a week, I was hoping it was him).
The recording did say the name of the county correctional facility he was calling from.

There was NO message / warning about inmates calling with scams or anything like that.

The recording did say IF I accepted the call, I would be charged $9.99 and could talk for 5-10 minutes, depending on the facilities regulations.

They want money for calls made from Prison. I'm not paying for any calls from any Prison,or any other Place!!!

Caller: Telemaketer: to collect money for Prison calls. I don't anybody in a Prison,and gave nobody premission to use my Phone No.

My boyfriend was arrested about 12:30 this morning. Received a call from this # about 3:30 am. didn't recognize the number and did not answer it. Maybe he really was calling me but I don't care. Thanks for warning me. I will not take these calls.

Don't know anyone in jail. The voice is muffled. My guess it's a generic recording. Someone off-guard might be curious and accept the collect call. Please don't!
I hung up.
It's unnerving to get those calls.
I wish these things would stop!

That's strange, considering all these other people who DIDN'T know the caller.
A recording came on when I answered warning me to beware of inmates calling with scams, and advising that the expensive phone charge would be mine. I blocked the call.

no name in stated when this number calls, no specific facility is specified, and calls over and over and over almost everyday.....

Every day for the last four days I have been receiving calls from 866-847-1251. My first call was at 3am, then at 7am then mid-morning and just a few minutes ago at 4pm. The callers name is muffled and they want you to accept a $9.95 collect call from an inmate.

In a Google search I found the same type of complaint as mine dating back to 2010 from the same telephone number. So, this has been going on for some time!

In one of the previous comments someone said they blocked their number from further calls by calling 800-844-6591. This is the company that apparently supplies the call service to the inmates. Going through the call tree I got to Keith. He was polite enough, but his first conversation with me was to get me to sign up for their service. I had to explain that I wanted my number blocked. He told me it would be blocked. Then I asked him how he got my number. He said I just gave it to him....no Keith, how did you get my number to give to an inmate?? I didn't get any answer on that.

Guess I will have to wait and see if I get any more calls. I hope not, this is really annoying. I guess that since complaints about this number go back to 2010 that there isn't a whole lot that can be done to stop them. Personally, I would like to see the FCC put them out of business.

It's companies like this that are lobbying for longer sentences and larger prisons. They get you to accept the collect call, get you set up to accept more collect calls, and it charges to your phone account or credit card.

When you as the voter call your representative and tell them that you want prisons to be non-profit, you will see a reduction from 25 million incarcerated to less than 10 million.
