ok...so this # is NOT a scam; i called DirecTV @ 1-866-617-9373; gave them this 888#: the rep told me that this # is from their promotional department; it applies to NEW customers ONLY, who don't yet have an account; still very interesting that a gift card is involved; if you're an established customer, this does not apply to you, and if you get the gift card, as it was said above...you can say goodbye to your $
Received a call (from some *other* and unknown #), supposedly offering a deep discount from a limited time DirecTV promotion. (The initial call to you had a scratchy, poor connection quality. The caller had a Phillipines accent to his English, which happens to coincide with what you get when calling DirecTV Customer Support, except that the connection quality on the line is decent, although not really good.) They provided _this_ 888 # to call for more info and to sign up for the offer, along with a promo code. When you call this #, it has the official-sounding audio-"logo" (which must have been copied), and a noticeably better sound quality. But, some quick research on the internet reveals that this is a scam, revolving around payment via gift cards -- pretty much always a tip-off. See, for example:

They have previously run this "promo" scam around Amazon, rather than eBay. If you bite, your $$ will go bye-bye, the *real* AT&T will tell you this was entirely bogus, and you will have nothing to show for it. So don't ! These guys are apparently hackers; don't be surprised that they may know who you are and some of your account info.
