Monetary contribution to the local police
I hung up on them
These calls from FOP are from the Fraternal Order of Police, which is a private membership club for police officers, providing benefits to them, among other things, of a legal defense plan that pays to defend them against criminal activities. In reality, it is a union. It is not a charity and contributions are not tax deductible. Aside from criminal legal defense for police officers, they have a huge lobby for legislation benefitting police officers and also a political lobby supporting their own agendas, such as support for the death penalty. I think it is despicable that their telephone solicitors think they are above the law, calling at all hours of the morning and night, calling 10 and 12 times a week, and most of all are dishonest about representing who they are and what they do. It IS a scam that this private organization, masquerading as you local police department, harangues you for your "donation."
"FOP"
I rec'd same call from FOP City of Sunrise - asking for donations - stating it was okay to leave my donation at door for pick up by police officer. I contacted the City of Sunrise Police Dept (954) 746-3600 - spoke w/the police department and w/the President of FOP and this is a LEGITIMATE fund raiser that started March 31st. Officer Krege is going to look into why this number is being reported as a scam. If you're unsure - contact your local police department. I was concerned only for the fact they were willing to come pick up my donation.
