The man I talked to actually sounded VERY American...claimed to be the US Gov't twice before my cell phone died...I tried calling back and got a message saying that the number or code I dialed was incorrect to check number and try the call again.

Talked to a Filipino-sounding woman who claimed I had been "randomly selected" for a gov grant. She stated that every year the federal government gives grants to good citizens and I have paid my taxes and have not committed any crimes. I was suspicious from the beginning but got more suspicious when I realized she didn't know my name, my employment status, my age, or even my zipcode. Thanks, chica. Good talk.

I reported this same number (202) 000-1111 to the FTC today. They called my unpublished landline twice, giving a similar spiel. Same story: an Asian sounding rep purporting to bevfrom the "U.S. Grants Department" offered me a $7,000 "grant" but said in order to receive the money I'd have to provide my credit card information. I'm intelligent enough to know that the US Government doesn't handle grants in this manner but through FAFSA (if at all); that no such department by that name exists; that they would not call so late in the evening; and, as previous consumers pointed out, would know my name; and, that credit cards never secure a legitimate grant. In speaking to an agent at the FTC, their investigator must have a certain number of consumer complaints in order to proceed. I submitted my complaint online at https://www.ft complaintassistant.gov. It took only a few minutes. Consumers can also place their landline and mobile numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry from the FTC website, and if already on that registry can file a complaint about its being violated (so long as their number has been on the registry for 31 days). Regardless of whether or not a number is on the registry, a complaint can be made. You will receive a numerical code to access your original complaint or add information to it. Or, you may file an FTC complaint by calling them at (877) 382-4357, then select your language of preference, and press option 1 to make a complaint. If everyone just laughs and hangs up, these scammers will never be prosecuted.

Received call from this phone number this morning; and the caller indicated he worked for the Federal Government Grants Department; and that I qualify for a grant. I immediately began laughing, indicating to the man that I knew this was a scam. When he tried to tell me his call was legitimate, I asked him to tell me my name (if I qualified for a grant, he should have access to my personal name). He hung up, because he knew I was on to him! I then blocked this number from my phone. They are violating the Do Not Call Registry, and I have an unlisted phone number. These scammers need money for Christmas, so they don't care if they are breaking the law or hurting innocent victims. I have never fallen for one of these scams, and just laugh at them when they call me. I just don't want them hurting anyone.

I received a call from this number on my cell phone. A woman by the name of "Karen" with an Indian accent told me she was from the US Government Claims department and told me I had $9,000.00 that would be coming to me. She asked me if I knew why I was getting this money and I told her because she was a fraud. Then I asked her for her name and the agency she worked for again and then I asked for my claim number. Then she hung up. Darn...

Iranian or Indian guy called and said he is with the U.S Federal Grant Department. I told him there was no such department and then he proceeded to argue with me like a 2 year old regarding the validity of his call. He kept trying to reassure me that I had won a federal grant and I kept assuring him that he was full of shit. He wanted me to give him my bank account number so that he could "deposit" my grant money and I told him he could just mail it to me. He became so frustrated with me and I told him I would call him back after I contacted the FBI....needless to say, he hung up/

Please, if you've gotten a call from this number, or from any number from anyone impersonating a federal officer or agent trying to get personal information or money, please call the FTC's fraud line at 877-FTC-HELP (877.382.4357), or complete a short report at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1 (under identity fraud). These are serious federal and state crimes.

If we don't report these calls, chances are they won't get caught!
