windows support. Spam

Received this call once or twice a day for the past four days. Name displayed is Jonathan Price. Finally picked. Called the number back several times and it is busy. Finally picked up the call and spoke to a young man with an Indian accent who said he is from Windows emergency support and is calling from the emergency center on a restricted line when I asked to call him back. The man knew our last name and both my spouse and my first names. I asked to call him back to which he said I could call windows customer care to help, buy they would not understand since his team was the one getting continuous error messages from our windows computer. Asked me to help him help me by logging into my computer and following his instructions to remove some files resident in my system that should not exist and which were responsible for the issue. I told him that I didn't believe him and that I was going to hang up. At that time, I believe he suggested that he would have to block my IP address, but not sure since I was hanging up and didn't ask for clarification. Hopefully, the calls stop.

646-588-1663 Johnathan Price wanted access to my computer as it is infected. Get these calls on a regular basis and the person on the other end always has a very pronounced indian accent. Asked to speak to me but could not pronounce my name. Dead give away to knowing this caller is going to spam me is the accent.

646 588 1663 Calls all day. I've had 12 calls in the past 5 or 6 days. There is no reasoning with these people. Asked me if I was near my computer and asked me to press and hold a couple of keys....one being the R key. I hung up.

This is likely one of the well worn scams for ransomware. I traced this back a while ago and the caller was in the UK, but spoofs a US Google number.

The basic idea is that they call, say they are from Microsoft, get you to allow them access to your computer and then they infect it. Following that, they have root control and try to sell you some utility that will fix the problem they planted.

Bottom Line(s)
Red Flag #1) Since when was Microsoft every pro-active about calling people to fix a problem?
Red Flag #2) If anyone is not willing to leave a message, there is a 99% chance the caller does not have your best interests in mind.
Red Flag #3) If the call multiple times and still do not leave a message, up the preceding percentage to 99.999999999%
Red Flag #4) Never give out your password or allow access to your computer that ***you*** did not initiate. This is like a person coming to your front door with some generic ID badge and asking to rummage around your house for some vague problem.

The best bet to avoid scams by phone is simple: If there is no caller ID (name and number), send it to voice mail. Most times, if you don't answer, they won't leave a message.

Indian speaking caller, with name coming up as
David Ross, yeah right, from what I could understand, saying that he was from Windows and that my computer was doing something and that he wanted me to go in and remove. I told him, I already knew his scam because friends of ours in another state had the same calls, and that I was going to report the call. He instantly hung up. Note, these calls were coming in at all hours and days.

An Indian accent guy called, telling me my Windows computer was sending error to a server. I told him I haven't used my computer in about a month. He asked me the same thing again. He was angry about my computer sending errors. Then he hung up.

Scam artist calls saying he is calling about my windows computer. I told him that was impossible, he insisted that he was definitely calling about my windows computer. I asked him how that was possible if I had apple...he hung up. I would guess it is a call center scam too, lots of noise in the background, poor connection and the fellow had an Indian (e.g. from India) accent.

Yep...got this one too. Actually twice today.

Didn't answer and just blocked them, but if this is the person(s) I think it is, it is a well-worn scam to get control of your computer.

The culprits are generally overseas but have a US number. What they do is scare people into thinking there is something wrong with the computer and ask for remote access. Then they install tracking software or ransom-ware. After that, they have control and charge you to get your computer back.

As with any call, the phone is for your convenience, the answering machine is for the caller. If the caller won't leave a message, it is 99% likely they do not have your best interests in mind.

I never answer the phone anymore if the number is not already in my address book with a name. it is good rule to go with. If people get upset, when then that is their problem, not yours.

A David Ross with the telephone number of 646-588-1663 has started calling me a few days ago. They call me several times In one day. Recently,
I had my cable service block robo calls and I guess it stops other calls to. My phone only rang once each time. I have caller I.D. t on my television, so when I saw the number and didn't know any David Ross I never answered one call. Next, I called my cable company and had this number blocked.

This number has called three times within the past hour, listed as Johnathan Ross. Hangs up every time my answering machine clicks on. Why doesn't the government do something about these callers? Reporting them to the Do Not Call list number achieves nothing.

The number is fake. Numbers can be faked easily but it take a person with a server in the US to relay the numbers from India. I do not know why these people in US are not shut down.
