3-6-25 Message from heavily-accented female left on landline # using my first & last name to let me know my phone number transfer request had been received & transferred to my new phone on 3-7-25. Her call back number was 866-806-1840 #5613. ONLY ISSUE IS THAT NO NEW PHONE WAS BEING PURCHASED, NOR HAD THERE BEEN A REQUEST TO TRANSFER THE #. I kept the recording just in case something actually does happen but it sure sounds like a SCAM to me!!

I just experienced what has to be the world's most surreal phone call and I'm still shaking my head. Context: I was awake until after 4 AM this morning. My phone goes off at 7:35 AM (default ring for numbers not in my contacts list is Buffett singing "I don't know, I don't know" from his song "Volcano" ... and that's the LAST thing I want to hear on just 3+ hours sleep). Normally I would just let a call this early go to voice mail but in my mostly still asleep stupor, I picked it up and saw it said that it was from my cell phone provider. Now I know that numbers can be spoofed, but groggily and not thinking straight, I answered it. Female voice on the other side asked if it was me (it was, I think, but said yes in any event). She said she was with [cell phone provider]. She asked if my phone was working. Obviously, it is, because otherwise how could she have called me? She stammered (must have lost her place in the script). Asked her why she was calling me at 7:35 AM on a Sunday morning to ask if my phone was working because all she would have had to do is check my account because I've had service with this provider for ... I don't know ... 7 to 10 years and it's been the same service with my last 4 cell phones. She said they had an "outage". I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She's with a cell phone provider and she's calling to see if my phone is working? Again, I told her it obviously was working. Then she asked if I had a pen and paper because she wanted to give me a number to call. I said, wait a minute. You call me at 7:35 on a Sunday morning, wake me up out of a sound 3-hour sleep [without coffee, incidentally] and then want me to take down a number? [And since you have my account there, you know that my phone has caller ID so why would I want to take down a number?] Is this a scam? Is this for real? She said "no, yes" and was totally confused even at herself. So I told her that my phone was obviously working since she got hold of me, thanked her for calling and hung up.
