They send a SMS (text) from 650-618-9523, with a four digit confirmation number to your phone during the easy activation process.

You and anyone you want to call must have the activated app. You both must have WiFi or internet connection for it to work. So, a person could be half way around the world and talk to you free as long as both of you are internet connected at the time.

It works just like your phone and seems to sound just as good.

Didn't sign up with Viber?

When someone with a Viber account (free) wants to reach someone who doesn't have a Viber account, the account holder enters your number and presses a button "invite" and you get sent a text message or a phone call.  

All that's happening is someone you know wants to hook up via a free call on Viber!!  
The account holder's phone number is the Viber ID.
