not Airmiles as claimed - just a scam

air mile scam it is

July 20, 2011 @ 10:05 MDT Received a call from 780-947-8989. "Congratulations collector. You have won 5000 air miles...."
I knew it was a phony call, but I pressed 1 anyway to play them along.
After about 25 mins of them yaking at me, I put them on hold while I went to discuss it with my wife and our 5 fictious kids. Heheh. Came back and gave a phony credit card number - missing a couple digits. I explained that's all the number I have on my card.... but I told them I'll check the card number with my wife and would they mind holding.... (HA!)

Ended up being a vacation holiday package from Tropical Travel. They wanted my credit card to charge US$699 to it (+ an extra $70 for my 3 kids over the limit - only 2 free).

They stayed on hold for about 11 minutes! Total call time: approx 40 mins. Wonder how much that cost them and I tied up both an agent and a supervisor!

Looks like I got someone's attention by playing along yesterday with the telemarketer and leaving them on the hook thinking I might want to buy. Today, I get a call back from Havier's supervisor asking me if I had any problems with him. Was he polite? I explained yes he was and then questioned him as to how he got my phone number.
"We get it from a referral database made up mostly of RCI resorts and others in the Cancun (MX) & Orlando (FL) area." I told him, truthfully, that I had never been to any of those resorts and please take my phone number off the list. "Okay we can do that. But are you interested in ..." NO THANKS. After that he said goodbye. I should have grilled him on when I'll get my free air miles... :)

The golden gem though: The phone number he was calling from IS VALID:
1-800-490-7452

Would like someone to put a stop to these annoying calls
