Hi Linda, "is it legal?" the answer is yes and no. are they calling to collect a debt? You do have specific rights to protect you from being harassed and .. you can sue them if they break the rules.
Make money fast! :-) To stop the calls goto http://www.privacyrights.org/ and click on debt collection in the left column. Read the fact sheets linked to near the top (27 and 27a) and look at the sample letters near the bottom. Make sure that the first thing you ask them for when they call is the name of the collection agency, and the mailing address. write it down, make them repeat it as many times as you need to to make sure you have it right. Even ask them to spell it out a few times. Record the call if you can, but tell them clear and plain that you are recording, and make sure you tell them again after you start the recorder so that you telling them is on the recording too.
