I just went through an excruciating experience regarding this particular scam. I received the call from a "Jason Smith" who worked for the FBI telling me that I hadn't filed taxes in 2014 (which I hadn't) and because of that there was a warrant out for my arrest - and - that my Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree were being revoked because I hadn't paid a "Federal Student Loan Tax". However he had looked at my file and learned that I was a good person and wanted to intervene and help me resolve the issue without allowing it to progress any further. My educational degree is a touchy subject for me, and I've always been worried about taxes, so I'm ashamed to admit that it was intimidating enough and scary enough that I followed his instructions all the way to the point of purchasing $6000 worth of Target Gift Cards to bring down to the local IRS Probate office (because they couldn't take a payment with a Debit or Credit card). However when I got in the car to drive down there, he suddenly wanted me to scratch off the silver stuff on the back of the cards and read the account information to him. Up to this point I had been suspicious, but couldn't really work up the courage to call him out on it, since he had threatened that if I hung up then he would allow the Police Warrant to go through and I would be under arrest. But reading Gift Card information to him over the phone? That didn't make any freaking sense... I asked to speak to his superior, who also had an Indian accent, and through questioning her on where she lived, where was she born, etc. - was finally convinced that this wall a big scam. I hung up, went right back into Target and got my cards refunded. Then to be safe I canceled my debit card and ordered a new one. The best advice I can give is to not be intimidated by their threats - the real IRS and FBI will not threaten you over the phone, nor will they tell you that you can't hang up and call their office to confirm that their warrant is real, or tell you that you can't visit a local police station to confirm as well, or tell you to go and buy $6000 in freaking Target Gift Cards! These scammers know how to push all the right buttons to scare you. Don't be fooled!

Told me the same as above. When I told him I was reporting him to my university so that he would quit targeting students at my college, he immediately hung up... lol

Told me a complaint was filed against me as well. I asked for my SSN for conformation that they had the right person and he wouldn't give it to me. He did read off my school, major and graduation date. Let me on hold the majority of the call. As I was skeptical of why the school would have a complaint against me he immediately started reaffirming he was from the FBI and said to google the number if I didn't believe him. The number came up FBI but this page along with his telling me to google the number knowing it would come up FBI lead me to hang up.

I hung up after about 10 minutes and googled this number wondering if it was a scam, which it is. I called the number back and got the actual FBI. The FBI said it was a scam targeting college students using their number, and he actually followed with asking if I attended UGA or Emory, which I did, because currently that is who they are targeting. He just said never give away information or money over the phone, obviously. With that being said, just always call the number back because you may actually get the FBI like I did.

They just called me and I called them out on their bullshit. They said someone had filed a federal complaint against me. If you call it back no one picks up and it says mailbox full...scam.

I got screwed by this in Nov because I googled the number and it does match the Athens, GA FBI department. I hate myself for being a sucker but he was well informed and intimidating. I even heard an answering message 1 time before mailbox became full. I've tried to get in touch with other officials to help me figure this out and no government employee has returned my emails or calls. I'm sure now it was a scam but how did you call them out? It's been 2 months but now i'm getting calls from that same number again.
