Should Have Known Better

I just got a letter in the mail today. Same as Victim's mother in Aug 10, 2017...letter on plain paper with no letterhead or logo. Application turned down due to insufficient information on application. Looking back, I know better and should have been more wary, but my letter was updated with QR codes and official-looking numbers along the side. I haven't had a Macy's account in over a decade. I got rattled, though, thinking that someone was trying to open an account in my name and, without thinking, called the number on the letter. After a long time on hold, I talked to a nice lady who asked me to verify my address, birthdate, last four of SS...all the info I should have never given. After she assured me the account was now marked as fraudulent and would be removed from my credit report in 30 days, I hung up. After thinking about it I realized I had been an idiot and checked Macy's website where i found their credit department number was similar, but not the number I had called. I called the actual number and talked to a gentleman there who checked the application and assured me it had been turned down and marked as fraudulent activity. I asked him if the number on the letter was a legit number for Macy's credit services. After quite a while on hold, he told me that number was not a Macy's credit services number. Now I'm contacting the credit bureaus to make sure I have my account secured as much as possible. I sure wish these people would get real jobs instead of trying to steal money from those of us who work hard for it.

I Smell a Scam

Just got an email from CitiBank USA (edelivery@citi.com) with an attached application for a Macys American Express Card and instructions to open the application. The email goes on to tell you to call 888-257-6730 to verify that the email was sent by Citibank. I, of course, had not applied for a credit card and did not open the attachment. I called Macys at 877-204-7996 and was told they had no application on file with my information. I have again changed my email password. So tired of these scammers!

August 16, 2022.
Received TWO similar letters from Macy's credit application department. Each letter addressed to strange, unknown names with the address missing one letter, but an added line saying something like 1058ROOMS. After reading about this 888 number being a fraud, I also called the actual Macy's 800 number. When I finally got through to the Credit application department, I gave the 'Reference Number' and YES, both names had actually filed an application. The very helpful, kind lady was grateful I reported it to them and she flagged both applications as 'Fraudulent.' I am no reporting it to the Postal Inspector and our Attorney General Fraud division. BE CAREFUL everyone....there are too many evil people out there!

I received a letter in the mail about applying for the Macy's American Express Card. They even had the Macy's logo minus the red star. I looked up the number given to me and found this page, and I called a number I found online for Macy's. Macy's confirmed that it was not one of their numbers and the reference number given in the letter was not theirs either. I was also told that they do not send out letters via snail mail--only email. I hope this helps others in the future.

I received a letter from what it said was from Macy's saying my credit application had been denied, and gave 1-888-257-6730 for questions by giving a reference number. I called that number today and they started by asking my name and last 4 digits of my SSN. I was stupid enough to give that info., but when they asked for my DOB and zip code, I thought better and did not give them that information. They asked twice and the second time, when I replied negatively, they thanked me and ended the call.

Stop it!

Same problem as the August 10th victim. Macy phishing scam.

My mother received a letter on plain paper (with no letterhead or logo) Stating that her Macy's card application was turned down due to insufficient information on the application. They asked her to call 888-257-6730. Mind you she never has had or applied for a Macy's card. Of course she did not call the number on the letter and contacted Macy's directly. They told her the number is not associated in any way with Macy's and they did not have an application for her on file. We believe this number is used for a phishing scam as she is having a lot of identity fraud attempts that have been stopped by creditors and banks. Tried calling the number from a business phone and got an Auto Attendant saying it WAS Macy's credit services.......
