What is a Government Scam Call?

Robocalls that consist of a caller trying to pose as any type of government agency is referred to as a "government scam" call. During these calls, a person will try to convince you that they are an employee of a government agency and that you owe them money or are wanted for arrest. They make these calls in hopes that their victims will wire them money out of the fear of being arrested. You should know, that no government agency will call you and ask you to wire them money over the phone. The most common form of a government scam is the caller pretending to be an IRS employee, and they will tell you that you must send them money to their bank account in order to not be arrested. Other forms of these calls are people pretending to be a part of the Social Security Administration, the FBI, a local police department, or Medicare. These calls can be very convincing as they will know your name, address, and social security number, but you should not trust them. If you are unsure if you are speaking to a government agency or not, you can call the real agency to confirm that it was not them calling you.

Came in as public service call - voicemail said they were from social security office.

Had received voice mail for drug plan qualification submission! The recent paper notification from the office had already clearly indicated that the office will never call. For unknown reasons, the scammer must have gained access to the application record in the open database (with phone number and application status).

Apparently these SCAMMERS are still at it. Received a call that I did not pick up on Sunday at 11:16 am from this number and lists as US Government. I rarely answer unknown calls and have better things to do with my time.

Received a call from this number today. A woman said she was calling about PACE which is a State, not Fed, assistance group for prescription meds.. Normally, I do not answer such calls. The caller ID says: US Government. I answered this call only because I have been making/receiving calls from different Gov branches re: another matter. She immediately began asking questions RE: personal financial matters. I told her I don't answer such questions over the phone. She said she will mail me something. After reading the above comments, I won't hold my breath. I will be calling to report this number to PACE tomorrow.

Called me today claiming to be Social Security about my brother. They asked for the last 4 digits of my social security number. Clearly a scam and could hear many voices in the back ground. Be aware!

Just got a call stating they are the SSA, and wanted to know information about my disabled son,, I am overly and extrememly protective of him She kept stating i was sent paperwork but i never sent back (Lie 1) When I informed her I spoke with my sons caseworker at the SSA office last week, she claim she had no record They I proceeded to read the letter I got from the SSN (No personal information given) She keeps persisting that i have to recertify my sons information on the phone, By know Im pissed, Told her absolutely not, if there is paper work need they can send it as they always have through the mail. She finally gave up and said they would send the documents to me. I was hesitant until i looked this number up on line and am glad my hackles were up

Applied for SSA and Medicare B online.
Called me twice in one day, left no message. Sent me a text telling me to call. Called again the next day, a woman answered and said she was from the Social Security Administration (SSA); asked for my birthdate. WAIT! They should know my birthdate and I have two phone numbers but SSA only has one. The number they called was not the number the SSA has on my profile. When I asked her how she got my number she said I could follow the text to verify her identity and call her back, then she hung up. I'm throwing the BS flag. No mail from SSA, just this call.
I reported it as fraud to SSA.

Miss Lotta called twice again this morning before 8:00 am.
She became nasty when I questioned her on anything.
"You can not ask me anything until I verify your identity".
I will wait for any info. via the USPS.

Please stop these people. Is there no penalty for this charade? They emailed with a phony email - then called today at 410 965 1234 and left voicemail. Referred to email so I knew it was baloney. Who is doing this? Do they have no shame?

I received 7 calls ETS back-to-back from (410 965-1234) starting at 11:10 AM to 11:23 AM. I answered (hello) a couple times and hung up. Then, they called 2 times using a "No Caller ID". They never left a voice message. I'm blocking that number.

Called at 6:30am waking me up. Grrr. I never, ever answer a number not in my contacts (though I know some have no choice with a work phone). I look up the number and if it’s not legit I block it every single time. If it is someone who left a legit message and I know I need to talk to I put in my contacts list. I know I have no dealings with Social Security except via snail mail. FYI: As soon as you answer you announce to the scammers it’s an active number and they sell your number to other scammers in which you’ll get even more calls. It’s so irritating that our phone system has become utterly untrustworthy since it was digitized. Carriers and govt really need to step up, it’s just gotten so over-the-top ridiculous how many scammers do this. Do Not Call list is a joke and scam blocker apps either don’t work that well or charge you for their service. Why should I have to pay extra to have a trustworthy phone service?

Hi! I work for SSA, at our HQ in Woodlawn, MD. the 410-965-1234 phone # appears on everyone's caller ID because it's a general outbound calling # that gets routed to our National 1-800-772-1213 Tele-service Centers if you call it back. We do call on Saturdays & Sundays, when we have the OT in the budget & to be onsite. But I always encourage my claimants, and family to be leary of giving out any info over the phone. If you're not comfortable discussing it with the person that called you, you can, AND SHOULD, go into your local field office to verify anything.
We should never be asking for you to give us your info. Typically we will provide your info to you, in order to verify it, i.e. SSN, DOB, Address, Attorney, Direct Deposit, etc. But, again, if you do not feel comfortable giving that info out, then you don't, and should not, have to.

All the best,

Brian

This is partially incorrect. We do work OT on some Saturdays only. We do ask for your information so that YOU can verify to US that you are who you say you are. We SOMETIMES send a letter before we call, but many times we cold call when we need to update something or if you have left a message. Finally, if you do not feel comfortable providing us with your information, request to call us right back at the office number.

White pages says this number belongs to Yolanda A Bruce, Bing.com says this number belongs to Federal Protection Service. Other people report this number belongs to the Social Security Administration's Baltimore office. They called me today and did not leave a message. Will not be calling back.

Just got a call on Saturday morning from this number and the mans name was Robert that was very persistent that I answer his questions and he had all my personal information and then reading this is a scam. Wow I'm calling the social security office Monday and reporting this and also contacting the law. If this is a true scam these jerks need to be stopped immediately and the ssi office needs more secure on their end! Very very agitated 😡. Get a real life and a real job you lazy people! Some people would give anything to be able to work!

They keep calling me saying they are from the Social Security Headquarters in Baltimore MD. I called the REAL SSA to find out what they wanted. I talked to a woman named Trudy & she stated that they did not call me. She checked multiple times and still she confirmed that no one from any legitimate SSA office anywhere in the USA tried to contact me by phone. She also stated that if they needed to with me they would have sent me a letter in the mail and to disregard the call because it did not come from an legitimate SSA office. They have called from this number 410-965-1234 two days in a row. According to the BBB. The company's name is Linden Rialto Condominium Association, Inc.
