This number is listed on the Experian website. When called, the ID displays "Real Estate Latino" and asks for my full social security number. I hung up.

This is a legit number. I received a text from Amex reporting fraud and called this number back. Then I called Amex's number on my credit card to confirm. Do not ignore this number but always feel free to call Amex directly to confirm.

Caller: American Express

I have gotten 3 calls so far from this number. The interesting thing about this call is that it is for my ex husband that I divorced 26 years ago, and haven’t had contact with since. Nevermind that he lives in a different state than I do! I called the phone number on the back of my American Express card and they said they would always personally call customers that had fraud issues. They never leave automated calls, texts or emails in these cases. I think what is going on is criminals are using a valid fraud department number for American Express to front their scam call. I know I’m not alone when I say I don’t answer my cell phone unless I’m expecting a call because of all the calls I get from people looking to phish or scam, fronting their call with someone else’s valid phone number. I’ve even gotten calls from my own number. It boils down to the fact that we live in a world full of people who have no interest or initiative to get a job and actually honestly earn a living, but would rather steal from those that do.

Received text from this number asserting that there could have been a fraudulent charge on my Amex card and to call the number. However, this is not the customer service number on my card.

Spoofing American Express phone number

Caller: Fake AMEX

Basically spoofed number. Yes, caller ID says "Americanexpress" (all in one word). But then they open with "We're calling from Visa and Mastercard services center!". I ask "How can I help you" and guy says "We're calling from your credit card". "WHICH credit card?" "Um..." and then call disconnected. So yeah, they spoof legit number for fraud

Caller: 1-800-824-9289

Spam call, said american express.

They say it's American Express, but it's actually India Express.

I received the same text as others. I don't even have an amex card!!

Caller ID said American Express

Caller: NCO

I guess they are getting tired as my message all I could hear was yawning.

American Express

Received text message saying it was a fraud alert. Amex Fraud Free: Did you just try to charge 49.60 USD on Card #XXXX at RENT2OWNUSACOM? 1 if yes, or 2 to call Amex. STOP to opt out. 8008249289

I did NOT call that number. I called number on back of physical card and they said they didn’t call me and I do not have a card number ending in those 5 digits (I redacted them from the message above).

It appears to be a scam but it’s well done enough that I called Amex at the phone number listed on my card. I will never call a company using the number they provide in an unsolicited text—-way to risky.

Looks like it is actually is AMEX. Called at the main # on the card.

Saying they're American express but calling about a card I don't have

Caller: Spam

I received a call from 800-824-9289. I called the AMEX customer service number on the back of my card. It was my wife's card and there had been two attempts to order something online and in both cases the card was refused. Both items were small (less than 30 dollars). My wife's card was cancelled after she called AMEX (she is on vacation). I think this might be a sophisticated scam. Just because a number shows on caller ID as 800-824-9289 does not mean that the call is really from that number. I have received calls on my phone from my own number. What might be going on is that someone attempts to charge something which they know won't work because the shipping address and the billing address are not identical. Then you get a call that looks like a genuine AMEX number but really is a cloned number. If you have gone online and look and see charges attempted that you did not make then you might be convinced that it is an authentic call from AMEX. You call the number back and the scammer tries to get information from you. I don't know if this is what is happening but it is a possibility so call the number on your card.

AMEX said its a phony number
Fraudulent Activity.attempt...Beware...

Caller: AMEX

Block them!

Caller: Scammers again!

18008249289 is a legit Amex fraud number. I called the number from a fraud-alert text message on my phone, but got a little suspicious after-the-fact and telephoned the number on the back of my card and confirmed the legitimacy of 18008249289. Amex is sending me a new card.

Caller: Amex Fraud Unit

caller showed american express, had sent an email and text yesterday re fraudulent charge of $19 on 3/15. i told them not my charge, they wanted me to start a fraud investigation on the phone only. told them since this was a scam, i would verify on line. "we can't do that!". i hung up and blocked them.

Dual communication / problem here:
This number did call me, said American Express on the caller ID, but when I called the number they gave, it was clear that they were not legit. The recording asked me for information that triggered my suspicion, so I hung up. Then I called the number on the back of my card, and spoke to someone. She checked the call log and verified that they did indeed block my card the day before because they thought it was suspicious activity. It was not fraudulent activity; I was trying to use my own card. Better safe than sorry, and I appreciate that.
HOWEVER, when she checked the call log, she said there was no record that they had just called me. So what I think is going on is that the scammers are trying to make it look like they are warning you, and then they turn around and stab you in the back. If the call were legitimate, then why wasn’t it on the call record?
The question nagging me now is how did the scammers intercept my transaction? After my American Express card was denied, I used my MasterCard and it went through. Are the scammers intercepting American Express transactions? Or are the scammers intercepting transactions with that online company I was dealing with? They got into the loop somewhere, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are also monitoring this website to see what we are all saying. They probably listen to what we say and then tweak their operation so that they can overcome any problems arousing our suspicions

SPAM CALL....got call at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning saying checking for fraud ...called AE # on back of cad and they said it was fraud...no recent transactions on the card (which is true) ..So BEWARE

Thought it was fraud, it isn't. Son had his wallet stolen and thieves were attempting to make a large purchase.
