This was a legit fraud call from American Express. I called after the fact and it was regarding a large charge amount. Do Not Block if you have an American Express card!

This is FRAUD. I replied to the number on the text and then when it seemed weird to me that they told me they had resolved the fraud without me talking to anyone I called the number on the back of my card and found out that AMEX had not contacted me regarding fraud. BEWARE

Legitimate call from Fraud Alert at AmEx. I went through their online contact number and chatted with a representative to verify. Still ended up having to call and remove the alert flag.

Not a scam, not a phishing expedition. This number is confirmed as American Express Fraud Unit. Call the number on the back of your card and ask them to verify the number to the fraud unit.

Took me less than 2 minutes to confirm this is legit.

Someone opened a American Express Prepaid card using my name, date of birth, and SS#. Upon the number on the letter I received regarding fraudulent prepaid card it took over an hour these people in India trying to close this account. I went through 1 employee and 2 supervisors and being asked to give my personal info again to verity the fraud and first being American Express didnot have a Fraud Department, then being they had one but would not answer the phone to customers. I then found the number for the Fraud Apartment which I assumed was in Utah. I found I was talking to someone in Manila, the Phillipines. After all this I can only hope that this account has been closed. Supposedly, I will receive (hopefully) a confirmation letter that this account was closed. American Express believe when I say I prefer to talk to people who can speak English clearly. I will never attempt to apply for one of your cards,. This whole ordeal was a nightmare. Your fraud idepartment is a joke. No wonder Identity theft is so prevalent in the United States because companies like yours do not care.

This is a legitimate number for American Express. However I did not recognize it and called using the customer service number on my card to verify, and would always advise others to do the same. If you ever suspect a number calling you is not legit you should use the numbers to contact them on your most recent bill and check.

This is NOT a scam number. Call is from American Express Card Protection Services. A call from this number means your card has been compromised. I don't know what all the entries are about that state there were phishing calls from this number, but if this number calls you, do NOT ignore it! Call the number on the back of your card, as I did. After reading posts here, I was SUPER paranoid about who I was speaking to when I responded to my call, but I can assure you, it is Amex.

This is bogus number. I got a message from them regarding a card I don't even have. Tell me that's legit number from AA Fraud unit. Don't even see any post from AA validating that here either. Would your bank call you and ask for your card number? Wake up, please!

I recently made three different purchases with a few thousand dollars each. Then I got an email from this fraud unit, telling me to call this number. I did. All I needed to do was to enter my card number and then say yes to the most recent three purchase amount the machine announced.
Yes, this is an American Express phone Number.

This is a legit American Express Fraud unit phone #.
I received 2 calls from them and then checked my account. They wanted to know if a purchase made for fuel was me. Said yes and that was it.

I got a call today from this number 1-800-824-9289, google and found this thread. (At the time, my card won't allow me to purchase stuff online, the retail site told me to call my credit card company or use another card).

As far as my experience go, this particular number is legit. Within 5 minutes of machine answering, and conversation with a representative, they lifted my flags (caused by a $1 charge from another online retail). And when I questioned if this call was legit, the female representative said I could call the back of my card to validate this call. I did not call american express because I was able to place the order right after.

Supposedly AMEX, I dont have an AMEX. Hit 0 like 10 times to get an agent...told them I didn;t have an AMEX and they started asking me for personal information. Could be AMEX but I highly doubt it, be careful with this one...
