What is a Government Scam Call?

Robocalls that consist of a caller trying to pose as any type of government agency is referred to as a "government scam" call. During these calls, a person will try to convince you that they are an employee of a government agency and that you owe them money or are wanted for arrest. They make these calls in hopes that their victims will wire them money out of the fear of being arrested. You should know, that no government agency will call you and ask you to wire them money over the phone. The most common form of a government scam is the caller pretending to be an IRS employee, and they will tell you that you must send them money to their bank account in order to not be arrested. Other forms of these calls are people pretending to be a part of the Social Security Administration, the FBI, a local police department, or Medicare. These calls can be very convincing as they will know your name, address, and social security number, but you should not trust them. If you are unsure if you are speaking to a government agency or not, you can call the real agency to confirm that it was not them calling you.

This number keeps calling my elderly brother over and over and he does not owe anything to anybody. He is penniless and barely makes it. Please do something. They tell him over and over they are a collection agency and ask for information from him. They get rude and nasty to him.

People are reporting on here that this is a scam so I almost ignored the letter they sent me. This is a real collector company trying to collect an outstanding balance. do not ignore this call like people are saying. If they are calling you, you owe a balance to someone!!!!

B., who are you anyway? Seems you are the only one telling people it's not a scam. Why aren't others on here saying the same thing? Maybe you are the scammer.

They keep calling and leaving messages, so I called them back to see what this was all about. I refused to verify any info such as my address, so they basically hung up on me. They claim they are trying to collect on outstanding debt from a member of our household, but that person doesn't have any debt. Scammers that need to be stopped.

this is not a scam- I thought it was too after reading people's comment on here. but it turned out that I actually owed an old bill that I did not receive. I would have your member of the household's credit score checked to see if someone else has opened something in their name

Asks for a person of a different name every few weeks. No message other than press certain buttons. They ask that even if you are not this person yo call back anyway to tell them. It does no good. They still keep calling.

Penn Credit has mailed and called me repeatedly and is trying to collect on a 4 year old disputed PARKING TICKET from city of Oakland, CA. Ridiculous. Apparently, the disputed ticket remains unresolved. Oops, there must be a snafu with communication and paperwork. There should be no doubt the city will eventually get their ill gotten gains either by direct payment or through the state DMV. I would not pay Penn Credit anything. Their demand letter is thrown in the trash without opening. I certainly would not talk with them on the telephone. Not one second. Not one cent. These creeps robot-called my elderly father's (he has Alzheimer's related issues) telephone in another far away state to prey upon and strong-arm him in order to obtain information they already have, or to get payment for a debt he is not responsible for and shouldn't be discussed with anyone but me. I am elderly and disabled myself. What they're doing is despicable, disreputable and untrustworthy. I highly recommend that no one talk with them, make any arrangements or agreements with them by any means. Hey Penn Credit! Cease and desist your reprehensible actions and behaviour. What you are doing is immoral, illegal, and just plain evil. Keep it up and and someone will sue the pants off you in small claims courts in separate states for many thousands of dollars more than the peanuts you think you're entitled to collect. When you ignore or refuse to pay the judgments against you; someone could then sell back to you or to another scummy debt collector like you, your bad debt and then you all can go F*** yourselves.

Called today and left a message at my elderly Mom's phone supposedly for my wife, her daughter in law. My Mom of course worried that someone was trying to get a hold of my wife. I called the bastards and told them if they ever called my Mom's number again I would sue them for elder abuse.

This has been the most persistent telemarket caller I have ever come across. They ALWAYS call daily. VARIOUS times a day, I actually ended up having them blocked.

This company keeps calling me. I do not give personal information out over the phone because there are too many scammers, so they won't give me any information on why they are calling. They are supposed to send something in the mail but I never get it.

just because you didn't get anything in the mail doesnt mean it did not get lost or they have wrong address listed for you. This is a real collection agency. you owe someone money somewhere- I suggest you figure out who you owe to and check your credit score.

Who do they represent? I have received calls starting months ago, 18009001370. Missed calls, then automated vm. They have the wrong name, i picked up, $ no idea where $500ish came from. Debt collectors 3rd 2nd party. I've used every online search phone reversal, who they are, located, florida, i believe im tired of shady companies calling, they don't have the right number, hell i googled myself, mylife, a few other backgroumd sites, mans photo, live in washington, 2 different ages, keeps on going. Im not paying for background company's to have the correct information. I keep track of my credit, class action suit. Fabricating, aggitating, love having b.s. call on my bday.

I have a POA for my 84 y/o Mom and they are repeatedly calling her using my 33 y/o daughter/her granddaughters name stating that my daughter/her granddaughter owes $75.00 and if not paid in 5 days to call 800 900 1370. Since my Mom does not have caller I.D. we assume it is the same number that is calling her. The fact is that my daughter has never lived there or given out her grandmother's phone number to anyone, as well as not owing anyone any money. Apparently with todays technology they are looking up public records and seeing possible relatives and using this info as an angle as part of a scam attempt. My opinion and suggestion = BEWARE THIS IS A SCAM - AND HANG UP DO NOT ENGAGE IN ANY CONVERSATION!

Called my parents - I haven't lived at that number for 30 years (!) - and recorded message said I owed a $150 bill to Verizon. Haven't had a telephone in my name in years.
